Archer Ann Clark Celebrates 91st Birthday

May 2, 2016

I called Ann Clark yesterday to wish her a happy birthday. Ann sounded as mentally sharp as ever and a quick phone call turned into a long winded conversation so that we could catch up. She is an archery champion and legend. She did archery exhibitions too.

I first met her around 1980-81. She brought her stage show to the WV Sports Show and I was her assistant since my father had a booth at the show. I was maybe 13-14 and it was a great opportunity to see an archery show besides Stacy's up close. I had been his assistant as a kid growing up but this was an indoor show and very exciting. Ann was fun and a very good archer.

She later gave me an award, a Ular medal that I still have. She and I remained in touch. After Earl Hoyt passed away Ann Hoyt moved in with Ann and they began attending the trade shows. I always called them "the two Ann's."

When Ann turned 85 she had a huge party at her home and I traveled to Cincinatti and performed. It was great fun.

You can read more about Ann in a celebrity interview on bow hunting.net.

If you have an Ann story or photo please post it.

Shoot Straight, Frank

She is such a wonderful person. Completely aside from her archery accomplishments and fame. Just a wonderful person.

Ann Clark is in MANY of my old The Archers Magazines (TAM), bowhunter's Magazines and my 1969 Ben Pearson Catalog. She really stood out with her blonde hair and beauty! Beyond that I got a strong impression of a very nice person and PASSION for archery.

Happy Birthday Ann!

Jason.

Ann is fantastic. I had the pleasure of visiting with her for quite some time at the 2004 US Outdoor Nationals in Ohio. She was promoting the Archery Hall of Fame, and when I went to introduce myself, she said "I know who you are!" :D

I was shocked that she knew who I was, and very flattered. We visited for a while about people we both knew, about archery and she wanted to know about my students and how they were doing. Such a sweet and sincere and sharp lady!

It was the highlight of my week to visit with Ann Clark. Thanks for sharing this Frank. Made my day.

I was hoping more people would post stories, photos and anecdotes. It's not name dropping, it is keeping the legend and stories on record for the next generation. They all know the tv celebs, but in my mind Ann and people like her are a treasure.

Frank, remember that show in New Orleans? I can't remember the year. It was right after Chuck got married and he was there with his wife.

Earl and Miss Ann were there of course. I went by the booth on the first day. Miss Ann was talking with one of their dealers (most folks don't know she is as shrewd a business lady, as Eral was a businessman) she saw me walk up and gave me that great big smile. She walked over, still listening to the customer, and gave me that patented Miss Ann 2 armed hug she had. She has that unique way of making you feel like the most important person there is just by doing that.

That was 1986? The SHOT Show? I have a whole album from that show. I don't remember what year Chuck married JoAnn, but I recall the 86 show was New Orleans. It was fun.

I have boxes of old photos and albums. What I have posted over the years is just a few. Somewhere around 1978 I traded hats with Fred Bear for a photo. He was something else. Did you take photos FDP?!? I always carried a 35mm camera in the pre cell phone days.

I have very photos of those shows Frank. I was working at most of them, and that kind of made it hard to take pics..

FDP-

Someday once I get them all in one place you will have to come visit. You could probably spend a few hours in the photos and would know most of the people. Starting in the 1970's through now.

I have an email for Ann if any of you would like it. Just private message me.

She is 91 but sounded like she did 30 years ago when I met her. Dick Mauch will be 90 this Fall. All of our living legends are aging well. Dick's energy is amazing for his age. For any age really. This is the greatest generation.
