How y'all doin' in archery land tonight? Anyway, I received this really nice Browning Explorer II today from a fellow Waller and was wondering few things. What wood is this riser made from? What year was it made? San Diego made? Here is the information; Browning Explorer II Serial number5D1704-2 It's a shooter! Thanks!

Brazilian Rose wood. I had three Explorers in the 70's. In my mind it was the best shooting bow I ever owned. I killed a lot of squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, and several deer with it. If you get bored with it let me know. AA

Thank you Altizer. It's really light colored. I'm used to seeing darker woods used in earlier ones. Think I will keep it until like the last one, until it gets too much for me to draw. Thank you again all.

That one is pristine looking Don. Nice find! I've seen a few of them that are unusually light colored like that one. Shoot the heck out of it;-)

That doesn't look like Brazilian Rosewood to me. Looks more like Shedua (Ovangkol) to me.

Yes, I agree with George...not rosewood. Shedua but nicely done.
I just shipped an identical bow to that one to South Dakota. That was the wood combo in 1975.

Yeah, I looked up the Brazilian Rosewood and there were many color variations only, I had no idea. To me, it was a horse of a different color. I'd looked prior to posting at Shedua and Bubinga colors and grains too. I'm ignorant of the wood as it's not the same as my '72 that I had once. I'm thanking everyone. They shoot so great! I can handle this one for awhile. And Jaz, you know better than anyone that I just need crutches ,to shoot or not.

Yes, a '75 BUT Browning moved out of the San Diego location in the 71-2 timeframe and transferred the production to HQ in Utah. Sorry but that one isn't San Diego built.

I'm almost positive that wood is Brazilian Rosewood but the East Indian variety - just a lighter shade than the darker ones. It's quite likely that this wood was used in place of the darker variety as supply decreased. Browning used shedua in their "lower" lines and the ones I've owned don't have anywhere near the figure of the light colored Explorers I've owned or seen.

Jaz, I thought that was a Rorschach blot. Whatever it is in the wood department, the bow is just what I wanted and I am very grateful to have it.Thank you all.
