This is from three years ago, but I wanted to show that you can shoot short distances accurately with a split finger draw, and index finger in corner of mouth anchor. I know some guys struggle with this but it's really about good practice and focus, nothing magic. This was with my Carroll's takedown at 15 yards in my side yard. This was after shooting at over 50 yards for a few rounds.
George...that's superb, as usual. Viper...you crack me up some times. It's amazing what folks used to do before other folks started telling us we couldn't huh?
Wild Bill, It isn't about shooting that group at 50 yards, it's about shooting close split finger. If you never heard it was a problem, you don't read too many posts about 3 under. Guys are going to 3 under to get a closer point on and better gaps....to shoot better at closer ranges. Particularly, 3D courses that rarely go over 30 yards or so. So yes, there are a lot of folks who struggle and if you read the posts/threads you will see that it is an issue with a lot of folks.
I have shot groups like that at 50 yards, but not lately. I have shot many 4 for 20 at 50 yards...even had a couple at 65 over the years. And I have shot as high as 480 on a field round course and averaged around 425. So I hope that answers your question. At 70 I can still average over 400 out of 560. Lots of folks shoot better than that by gapping and string walking though.
Jawge...I've anchored that way since I started shooting a bow, mainly because that is what most folks were doing that shot without sights. We shot field rounds, so it gave us a better sight radius to reach long targets.
Jawge, I should have added that the real anchor is the top of my hand against my cheek bone. The index finger in corner of mouth is just part of that but that gives me the longer targets more easily.
Always have shot split with index finger in corner of my mouth. Shot all field distances that way. Managed to shot low class A. Hunted that way too. Have to be honest, tried 3 under on bird (bunnie) 15,, 20.. Just never felt comfortable.
I anchor with my index finger in the corner of my mouth as well, whether I am shooting 3 under or split finger, just feels natural to me. I suppose the string against the tip of nose and chin must be the superior way, since some of the best archers of today and yesterday anchor that way.
I won Longbow div WA3D worlds in 09 (33y max) shooting split finger against a field of 3 under shooters. If you put the work in and have faith in your technique anything is possible.

This is me shooting the Bunny at 2010 worlds, tough to nail those spots with woodies.
Thanks for sharing George. Great shooting! Good to see your form. I was out shooting tonight . Working on keeping bow arm on target like you do. - Chad
