Hi all
Close to my blacktail being made, 2-3 months away - I'm thinking about having bloodwood or purpleheart as the accent lines.
Just wondering how long they will keep their colour (little aware that the more uv light they are in then the quicker they change colour) are we talking a year or years, just after your experiences of having them in your bow
I've asked other bowyers for same accents & some don't as they say lose there colour fairly quick & then you will be left with what appears as faded coloured wood.
Pics of your blacktails welcome.
Thanks

I have a couple of Snakebits with purple heart accents and can't detect any fading yet, but it's only been a few years. I think if anything most woods get darker over time, the snakewood in my bows is slightly darker now than when brand new. It's a little less striking than when brand new but more subtle and beautiful with a deep richness to it. I prefer the aged look.
I have an older Blacktail of bocote and myrtle with myrtle accents, once again no changes detected in the color of the accents.
What woods are you getting in your bow? Some accent woods go better with certain riser and limb woods. If you want to make sure nothing changes I'd go with myrtle accents, depending on the other woods in your bow that might be the best choice anyway.
This photo is my TD Snakebit with purple heart accents the day I got it. The snakewoods is less flashy looking now, darker and deeper with slightly less contrast between the red and black.

This is my one piece Snakebit, also with purple heart accents. No fading of the accents that I can tell but the snakewood is developing a nice patina. This photo is when it was relatively new.

Pretty hard to find a bowyer who will not work with purpleheart...pretty hard to find a bowyer who will work with bloodwood...if you want something on the less usual side go with the bloodwood

I just talked with the guys at Bloomington this week. The Snakebit has been discontinued. They showed me their wood inventory, and they really have some good stuff in stock! I, d give them a call, or visit if you can

Too bad about the Snakebit version, but I know nicely figured snakewood is getting increasingly difficult to find.

There is a Columbian longbow on the in stock page that is for sale and it has snakewood. So is snakewood really gone or just rare?

The new website does not seem to specify this but on the old website Norm made it clear that he would only make the Snakebit bows when he had top quality Snakewood available...my guess is that they no longer have a source for top quality Snakewood

Accent options? I prefer a good Scottish brogue myself. One of Norms original Blacktail bows has been riding the pages at Ebay for a good while now, and I don't understand why the Blacktail crew hasn't jumped on it. I just looked an it still hasn't gotten a bid at $325.00. 66", 54#@28.

Can't wait for the bow - think I'm leaning towards bloodwood as the accent. Now it's the finer details of footed or reversed & which wood goes where on the shields & finger overlay section. Will deff post pics - the waiting is so hard even though I know their build time is only 6-8 months, I'm waiting for another bow from a different bowyer & im 16 months in. Thanks for all your comments.

Why don't you just give Norm a call, I'm sure he's had experience with most of the woods. He can be a great help.

I had been hearing things like it takes a long board just the get some usable stock out of snakewood? Dono but there was a reason it went up so much too. When Norm raised the singal snakebit bow to $2,500.00 I thought I got a great deal the year before when I found a new bow with 2 sets of snakebit limbs for that price. Been debaiting to send in to get it glossed or not?
I do love snakewood.

The top bow has purpleheart accents that have not faded. The snakewood on the top bow used to look like the middle bow when it was new 5 years ago.
