What do those of you who have used the Atlatl, what do you use for a target? Does the large shaft damage the Foam Block type? Suggestions please.

same^ They can tear them up a little more beacuse of the shaft diameter, but it's not too bad. I do a lot of throwing as bottles and such simply because it's pretty darn hard to lose a 7ft cane dart

Same thing I use for arrows. Big Amish square bales, round bales, and I threw at my 3d target a dozen or so times. It really rocked the foam target, impressive, but yeah, it left some big holes in there so I quit doing that.

A thrower showed up at our range with an atlatl using a "dart" made up of two full length 2213 arrow shafts.
Needless to say, all of us were much more effective with our bows. But like anything, we showed improvement with practice.

That's right, it's older and more traditional. ;)

Thanks for all the answers about this subject. SB if it is not for you please don't bother to read what others say, just pass on to what you like about the leatherwall. This is a great place to Learn about lots of things. I have a friend here in SW Florida and he wanted to try it and use my Saunders Mat. I want to find another target for him.

I made a 4' by 4' target out of old lumber load tarps that the local hardware store saved up for me which you can see in the background of this picture. I also pick up used targets off of silent auctions at 3D shoots which can usually be had at a fair price for their condition. The 3D targets seem to hold up about the same as the ones I shoot arrows at. Dave

We throw them at our 3 D targets. Don't damage them much though because I can't hit them but we all have fun trying.

I make my darts out of Oak dowels and never make them more than 4 feet long. Typically 5/8.They are a kick to mess with. Fletch them with long high feathers. They are a kick to play with.

yelloweye,
Type 'paleoaleo' on youtube video. He has a fine video series on making atlatl. Absolutely worth watching. The guy that made the videos is Tom Mills. He also has video of making and shooting selfbow and arrow. Didg and bodhran player as well. Interesting cat. I believe he started paleoplanet. You might check that site for atlatl as well. Have fun.

"It aint archery" It almost is. It is stick and NO string - or Stick and Stick. If you tie a string to your thrower, can you call it "stick and string" then?

"Winky" the Raccoon's dart came from Thunderbird Atlatl.
http://www.thunderbirdatlatl.com/
We went to a two day event where Bob demonstrated making atlatls, straightening darts over a fire, fletching, making stone tools and point hafting. The class participants were mostly archers or college students. The second day was a shoot event, so we got to see all types equipment. Somewhere on the East Coast is the closely guarded location of a species of cane that is perfect for darts.
