I've been after a big 8point since early October we had many encounters but I wasnt able to get his pattern down until very recent. Well he made a mistake and so did I. I slept in Sunday morning for the very first time this season to spend some family time and the buck was taken via gun by a man who lives across street from farm I hunt. He has nompermission from farmer nor the elderly couple who own the woodlot the deer lived in. We've been doing QDM in this area for years and finaly seeing results. I've 30 yrs old and I've never been able to hunt a buck in Michigan this big. I did my research and asked questions to neighbors and followed tire tracks to what the picture shows. I saw picture of deer hanging and he was neck shot explaining the one large spot of blood he was dropped. I'm truly saddened by this but the farmer does not wish to press charges but is not happy. I'm respecting his wishes and moving on but my season is not the same now. The guy hunted land years ago but was kicked off due to not following landowners rules but he got his buck anyhow...

the low lifes are out there. Some years back a redneck pulled off the two lane highway and shot a big buck off my neighbors, just before it entered my property. Game was called by a witness, and all the game warden did was check the deer to see that he had checked it in. Said he could not prove it was shot from the road, even though it was witnessed. I have had tree stands stolen from my property, all night coon hunters, dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, garbage dumped, rifle shots in the dead of night, you name it, ive experienced it.

Co-worker has a bunch of acreage she and her husband manage for bigger bucks. They are bowhunters. They have, among others, one nice big 2yo 8 pt with great gene potential that they were holding off on for the future. It was shot by a trespasser opening weekend of gun. They saw a pic of the guy posing with his rifle deer. They have a pic of this same scumbag on trailcam, very obviously the same 'kid' (in his 20's). He has been warned to stay off their land in the past. Now they are trying to work with the authorities to prosecute, but having difficulties at best. No proof, etc., all the technicalities need to be in place to bust him. All I can say is, I am glad I do not own MUCH land FOR THIS VERY REASON! I know of NO landowners that don't deal with trespassers or other such poachers every year. This kind of 'hunting' is intolerable, but it happens all the time, and nothing much at all is ever done. Makes me sick.

Man that burns me up. Deer and females make men lose their minds. I know it would feel good to hit that guy over the head with the buttstock of his own gun but instead just pray for him. When I was younger I would have sought him out and did my best to beat him down. He will get what's coming to him. Be sure of that. There's a nice deer with your name on it out there.

Owners don't have to press charges anymore. New hunting/trespass laws that went into effect last year. Property also no longer has to be posted.
Here you have hunting trespassing(big issue) Unlawfully taken trophy deer(several thousand dollars)
DNR don't need landowner permission to press charges for these instances. It's your duty as a ethical hunter to bring this to the attention of the local conservation officer. Good luck.

This happens to every one of us. In 2006 I had been watching 3 Giants in NJ they were all brothers or related anyways gene poll. So were others watching as well as various farms, LEO's ect. These 3 amigos were famous in the area. I had 2 off them close to me several times and wondered about the 3rd. I found out the 3rd was shot with a 22 buy a kid off the road just below my lease off the highway and they got the guy. The 2nd never herd and the 1 I got a 161 3/8 that's big deer for NJ. These big deer or any quaulity buck people do things it makes them nuttier. I wonder whats really in their head though.
Had any of them been poached on our propertys the landowner would not prosocute he hates deer he told me and he didn't care how they left his property. How can a property be protected this way? It can't and he said your lucky to hunt my property where there's good deer hunting. That's the position and mind set of some in NJ.
Makes us all sick especially when you have others riding around at night shooting deer from their vehicles while we sleep and hunt in daylight. We cab bitch about it but its not going to do much good other than blow off steam.
We have had Leo's in our club also and they said unless we catch someone in the act then we can not get them and then we have to get property owner who has to show up in court. Property owner says what so they can burn down my barn? To much aggravation I have farming to do.

You will do well to respect the owners who don't want to file charges. That shows you are a man of honor. Karma is a bitch, so they say, so likely what goes around will come around to them. Just have to let it go.
We have over 100 acres of mountain land in our family here in the Allegheny Mountain foothills of Pa. We never have posted it so I guess people think it's not worth hunting on, save for a few neighbors who show up the first day of rifle season. You will always have the dregs of society show up now and then, but somehow they seem to delight on going on posted land more than any other. Hang in there, maybe the big fellow had a brother.

Bummer, very disappointing.
I have been on a couple whoppers over the years only to have them poached at night with a gun.
Not that I would have got them anyway, these were crazy smart deer but being in the game was so much fun and it is so disappointing to see it end that way.

Sorry that who harvested the deer had a bad record with the land involved. Kind of reverse of this is what happened to me some years ago. For years. about 30, I had permission to hunt about 10 acres within walking distance of where I lived. . The owner's wife had been one of my high school teachers. The owner died. His son let someone have control of it who would not let me hunt. He had a hundred acres on the other side of the road that the son let him have control of too. But he wanted complete control of the little 10 acres as well. I just about begged that I'd only bow hunt and traditonal only, but still the answer was no. I had hunted the land since a teenager. Was he right to deny me? Sure, by law. I am glad that I was able to hold on to self-control in this situation but it wasn't easy. The son's owner took a strange approach. He put in a good word for me.but ultimately the decision was the guy's.

It isn't just land-owners, it's the 'horn hogs' as in Letrwalk's post. Leasing, bad behavior, liability worries etc. are all contributing to a decline on access.

Most (not all) land owners will think twice before signing charges or otherwise going after a neighbor for killing a deer. I know because I've been there myself and understand it. You don't want trespassing or poaching. You also don't want a permanently upset neighbor regardless of whether you like them or not. Relationships with those who live close by are a lot more important than any whitetail buck. I'm pretty sure this is why the farmer wouldn't press charges. Taking it to a criminal level is pretty much asking to live next to an angry man. I'm not saying it's right or fair, but that is how a lot of land owners view it.
I've seen what happens when neighbors trespass and legal hunters go after them. I call it 'war in the woods'. It's a game to the trespasser and it's like shoplifting; the thrill is getting what he wants and screwing those who would stop him. In the end you have to pick your battles and figure on losing many of them.

Totally agree Babysaph.
I know a good guy who would put up with NO cheating on his hunting property. Anybody who insisted on violating caught hell, was confronted, photographed, and turned in. In return the neighbors reached a point of disliking him intensely and never missed a chance to let him know it. War In The Woods. He put a huge amount of effort into the battle and he defended his property. Unfortunately he did it in a way which left the surrounding land owners unwilling to cut him any slack. He was the kind of guy who wouldn't let that bother him, but most of us rural people just don't want bad relations with a neighbor over a dead deer...especially long term neighbors.
It pays to remember that a lot of land owners don't put much or any value on any kind of deer. They're just animals to hunt and sure as heck not worth any kind of disagreement...to them anyway.

Sorry to hear. Not everyone was raised with ethics. I do think you should still hunt, chances are there is more then one big buck on that property. My son ARROWED two bucks from the same location this year in MI, the first was a 140" 9 point, the second a bigger 12 point. That just was not your buck, go get a bigger one!!!

I saw a story in the news today about an Iowa farmer having a dispute with the DNR about the ownership of a set of 14 point antlers that the farmer claimed to have arrowed legally in 2012. The dispute alleges that 1 of 4 Oklahoma hunters, hunting illegally, actually shot the deer. The 4 Oklahoma hunters have hunted in Iowa illegally for 2 or three years. They did not have non resident tags and they did not participate in the non resident tag lottery. bvd

You are right Kevin Dill. I have been there myself and I chose relationship with neighbors over pressing charges over a deer.it is troubling to me the number of people nowadays who are willing to break game laws to kill a deer. I guess it just reflects the morality of society as a whole. It has been well said that character is measured by who you are and what you do when no one is looking.
