I have started testing some acrylic latex paint for dipping and I am curious what experience others have had. I have found that even 12hr after dipping the paint while somewhat dry to the touch, is still far from hardened.

I want to follow up the dip with another dip in satin water based poly for durability. Is anyone doing this? if so, how long do you let the initial paint dip dry.

My early experiments with the lated looked good but was not durable at all. Hence the poly dip overcoat.

I've tried acrylic latex too with disappointing results. Drying time is an issue as you mentioned, but for me thinning to get the consistency right to drip evenly was experimental at best. Even when thinned pretty well, it's very high build compared to lacquer. So you can end up with quite a film to the point where you'll need to re-cut the nock taper if you dip a white base for brighter colors over the cap.

Too time consuming and problematic so I kinda' lost interest. If I want to cap again I'd probably go back to a Bohning system.

Latex paint takes about 2 weeks to cure completely. Spray lacquer cures very quickly, but I wait until next day to fletch.

Have done a lot of arrows the way you are describing....no issues. Many I shoot were done years ago .

I tried it years ago. What a disaster, the paint never dried, shafts came out way to heavy. Wasted a doz. Acme shafts. I know guys like to use local, cheaper ways to do things but if you want waterbased paints I would go with the new waterbased paints that Bohning offers.

The paint I was using was new and dripped off as well or better than the Bohning paint I have used in the past. I dipped yellow and it covered well in one coat.

After they cure for a few days I will do the water base poly which should give the surface plenty durability.

I got 1oz bottles of latex from a local hobby store that I will crest with.
