Didn't realize he was that young... Sad to hear... I enjoyed his bow and bowhunting writings when I was a kid back in the day along with firestick brethren Jack O'Conner and Elmer Keith...
Mr. Dougherty was a true icon of the hunting community and will be missed...

When I was a kid I had my folks take me to the Bow Hut just so I could meet Jim. He had patience for a 12 year old bow who was fascinated with bows & arrows. Never forgot that conversation even as I approach my 68th year. His passing brings sadness to me.

Jim was a class act. I enjoyed going to his shop in Tulsa. He always took time to help me out and even gave me some feathers from his personal supply. I tried to pay him for them but he wouldn't take any money. My prayers go out to his family.

Archer, writer, hunter, legend. Jim started out working in Doug Kittredge's "Bow Hut" in South Pasadena, CA in 1957-58. He was the "shop boy" fletching arrows and sweeping the floors-- a certified member of the "Southern California Archery Fraternity" in an age when our region was the center of the archery universe. The world has changed much since those Golden Days. Had the pleasure of shaking his hand at the Archery Expo in Las Vegas, NV back in 1990. Let us never forget this man and his marvelous, abundant contributions to our sport. A tip of the cap to you, Mr. Dougherty. Thanks for showing the rest of us how it's done.... Sorry to hear about Jim. Every time he would introduce me to someone he would tell them that he was my unofficial manager. RIP

I remember his hunting stories and photos of him hunting in the archery magazines long ago and what a great representative and influence he was to our sport. RIP Jim.
