Hi Everyone, awhile ago I started working on a self bow, seeing as I had never made one before and wasn't to sure about chasing a ring I made the bow out of shag bark hickory. My Nephew cut the tree down for me and brought it to me then we split it up. some came inside to dry and some went under the deck. This is the first bow to come out of the tree and I made it as a gift for my brother, woh BTW has called me more in the last 4 days than he has in the last 4 years. I couldn't be happier because he likes it so much. So here's the stats, 50lbs @ 27" and 62" NTN. He says that the bow is a quiet as a mouse fart. The tips are 3/8s wide and sheep's horn as is the arrow rest

Very nice. Have many shag bark hickories on my property and really want to make a self bow. Hate to cut down a living tree but there are two in particular that are very straight and 8-10" in diameter. To be so successful with your first longbow, did you follow some plan? Been scared to dive in. Your bow is a looker! Hard to believe it's your first. Great job!

Yes I did follow a plan I used plans for a pyramid bow, I peeled off the bark and scraped off the cambium, then I drew out my center lines and then the bow, I removed all the wood on the riser and limbs with a sure form file, I didn't use any power tools at all.I flipped the tips after the bow was tillerd so there working tips.

Best part of making bows is giving them away to deserving people. Good job.
