I've applied for a Tundra Swan Permit for NC. If I draw, I am considering using my longbow. I need any advice/info that anyone can provide. If you have had any experience with outfitters that take archers I would appreciate any feedback.

Those are some huge birds, they migrate through here every year at extremely high altitudes, about as high as they can fly after climbing from Lake Erie...

Personally, I wouldn't hunt any waterfowl with arrows unless smaller ducks with rubber blunts, because I see way to many news videos and articles with geese skewered with arrows sticking out of them in non vital locations with the public trying to catch and save them... Way too much publicity for the antis to fuel their fire...

Zbone has a point and a good one. You may wind up on the evening news.

I've seen pictures and videos of deer running around with arrows in them, does that mean I shouldn't hunt deer with bow and arrow? Almost all those pics/videos of waterfowl with arrows in them were the result of some idiot shooting them with field points. Guys have been harvesting tundra swan in NC with archery tackle for years.

Don't forget to eat that bird, dress the whole bird out and saver for Thanksgiving should be a feast of all feasts if you cook him right and don't dry him out. They are very good I ate one like 20 years ago.

TRUMPERET SWANS they do a lot of damages in the cranberry bogs of NJ.

I've killed a few Canadians with a longbow. use a good 2 blade cut on contact broadhead. if you can get a guide or know how to set up so you will be getting shots as they are setting down, your chances go up a lot of percentage points. I do not shoot at rising geese. good luck! hope you harvest your limit!

I'm really hoping I draw this permit. NC only gives out 5000 permits and there were 7000+ applications last year.

Look up North Carolina Bowhunters Association. They have quite a few members that hunt tundra swans fairly frequently. They should be able to steer you towards outfitters or other opportunities.

I didn't draw last year so I'm trying again this year.

Treat it like a turkey. Big 2 bladed broadhead and hope for a quick kill. If they're like a goose (when hit poorly) hopefully they cup, glide, and land somewhere relatively close. Then just have to wait it out. Have hit enough geese in fields with a shotgun and watched them soar a ways and set down on gut shots. More often than not I walk over and pick them up deader than a hammer after a hour or three. Good luck!!

When I hunted geese in Saskatchewan near the Quill Lakes I saw quite a few swans. Wondered if there was a season anywhere. Good luck!

Phil/va , I live in eastern N.C. Hyde county, swans are thick, get a white suit and lay in the decoys ,or camo in a ditch ,make sure you take waders if you hunt out of the ditch I will pm you a outfitter name & number. January is good hunting .Forrest
