I have been doing reinforced self knocks like for ever.Over the years I have used hardwood,Aluminum, Perspex ,horn, and bone.I really like bone but it's time consuming to work and it also stinks.I just got a piece of electrical circuit board made of some polly resin or epoxy stuff .This stuff works like bone but shapes far more easily. It should give me the look of bone but less work. The stuff is called Type Z Bramite . This is what I been using in the past.Top hardwoodSecond row bone Third row Bramite Bottom row sawn unprepossessing bone.

Rich, they look great. I'd like to see some better pics up close... better lighting maybe?
Personally, I love the smell of bone, horn, brain, hide glue, etc being worked. I haven't tried to analyze it :^)
What kind of bone is that?

Solid Australian iron bark hard wood.Another source of knock material is ivory and ebony. Now I know Ivory is now prohibited and ebony not real common either. You can use old piano key ivory for reinforcement. The black ebony keys make good solid ebony knocks. Plenty of old pianos around. OSR

Neuse I turn a shouldered pin on the knock blank by spinning it in a electric drill. With the arrow I drill a corresponding hole in the end of the shaft and glue the blank knock in with epoxy.I then finish the knock as if it was a self knock. It takes 15 to 20 minets per knock.I have a jig I made to drill the end of the shaft dead center and to the correct depth.I also works with horn and bone too.The pin I turn is 31/6" diameter x 3/8" long. Not a real hard procedure .Just takes time that's all.Black ebony piano keys are the prettiest knock and these I sometimes splice.
