After reading about the Black Bear Riser/Sage limbs combo, and having some problems with my Carsage, I decided to try out the BB combo. I finally was able to get a LH riser, and I have been setting it up this week. I had to lightly sand the limb buts to get the bolts to go in properly, but other than that I just sanded the riser down and repainted it. I'll try to post a pick tonight when I get home.

Anyway, I had a couple of questions for any of y'all that have this combo or the Warf version. First, I was wondering what brace height most use. I shot it for the first time last night. I started at a 7 inch brace height and it shot pretty nice. I didn't get a chance last night to adjust the BH any, but plan on playing with it more tonight. Also, I was wondering about the warf plates I've seen on EBay. If I was to decide to go down the warf route in the future, how do they work? Would I need to machine the riser any to install them?

Thanks,

Mine usually settle in around 8 to 8 1/4" and seem to shoot best at that BH.

ditto what wild hog said. 8 1/4 is my sweet spot but you can go as high as 9.

Lowcountry, If I understand this right you just sanded the butt end of limbs. Did you have to pad the limb socket or put in shims to keep the limbs from shifting side ways? I picked up a Black Bear riser at an auction last week and was thinking of doing the same. What weight limbs should I order to get a 45#@28"?

It looks really good, like a hunting machine. Good job

It looks good! I like the camo job. Simple, easy, and non glare

Thanks everyone.

Stkbow3 - Yes, I just had to sand the but end (it was less than a 1/16 of an inch) of the limbs, not the sides. You may not need to sand at all, but I couldn't get the bolts to line up just right. There is a gap on each side of the limbs that I currently just have shimmed with popsicle sticks. I plan on probably permanently gluing the popsicle sticks in before I am done. I didn't pad the limb pocket with anything. I don't know if I needed to do that or not, but it seems ok as is. The limbs I put on are 50lb Sages. I haven't scaled it yet to see what it actually is, but I think it should be pretty close to 50lbs. I'll try to scale it tonight, and I'll let you know.

8" brace here as well. I don't like the plates. They make the Limbs sit well above the pockets and create a lot of noise. IMO the sage limbs work just as well as the ILF limbs.

To quiet your setup down a bit, try filling the limb pocket cavities with foam. The great stuff foam works great.

Bondo also works really well to fill the voids in the limb pockets, and adds some additional weight. For filling the spaces on the sides of the limbs, see if you can find some fender washers that will fit, and epoxy them in place rather than using the popsicle sticks. You MAY be able to use 1/16 aluminum or something similar as well.

I used self adhesive cork shelf liner to shim the pockets on mine. Filled lower limb pocket with lead. Really deadens and balances it perfectly without the need for a stabilizer. 40# sage limbs. Probably the best overall shooting bow I own.

What is the measurement from the front edge of the Sage limb to the center of the limb bolt hole?

If you sand the ends of the limbs square and the limb pockets are square, it is not necessary to shim the sides of the limbs as they can not move side to side if they are butted against the end of the limb pocket. I have had to sand just one set of limbs and it was the last set I got. I pad the limb pockets with the rubber that you use as an insulater under the floating flooring material. It helps to quieten things down and also helps to pad the limbs if you are using the rockers from the compound limbs. This one fit perfect and it shoots better than you would ever imagine.

They are cool looking and you can paint them any color you want. If you scratch it or get tired of it, then just paint it again.

Here's my creation, a Bear Super Magnum 44 compound riser and Bear Hunter Take Down limbs. Shimmed with popsicle sticks on the sides, it shoots great. Journey and Sage limbs fit too and are a little smoother.

Here is that same riser with Samick Journey limbs.
