I have a howatt hunter. 62" . wood tips so it may be somewhat older. still trying to figure out how old. I plan to practice around 3 times a week , and hunt about 3 times a week. How often should I keep unstringing it ?

You won't get a definitive answer...only many answers. I unstring my bows after each use. Many folks let them strung all season. I believe anything under constant tension will weaken quicker. Others disagree with that. So in the end, you need to make up your own mind. It's kinda like "what does fast-flight ready mean?" No one knows.

It's so easy to put a stringer on it and unstring a bow , why would you not?

I seem to unstring them if not shooting them for more than a couple weeks or when transporting in a vehical. I rely on my mental comfort when to unstring and then it never bugs me. :)

B.W. LBs must be made differently if they can be left strung indefinitely, are they all glass? A curious Cajun wants to know.

Do you release the tension on your car springs when you are done driving? Stringing and unstringing can cause more problems than anything else you can do to a bow. I have had bows strung for many years as I shoot pretty much every day. No weight loss, no bad effects at all.

I left my 72 Bear SK strung for a number of months testing the stretch in a B50 string. The bow is fine. The string stretched but after I unstrung the bow a few days later the string was the orginal length. Now that made me wonder.

If it's a glass backed bow then it can be left strung - I virtually never unstring mine. But, like Geo sez, to each his own and for their reasons. Btw, I said "glass backed bow" because you sure wouldn't want to leave a selfbow or any other all natural make strung, because you will assuredly damage it eventually.

There is no sense owning bows and then doing what others tell you to do with them...I do what I want to with my bows, as I do with pretty much everything I own...you fellow who I just bought a motorcycle from keeps telling me to be careful...I was planning to do that anyway since pain is not among my favourite things

I've had my Brack. (glass limbs) strung for a long time and it doesn't seem to affect it. I twisted a limb on a DM stringing it incorrectly once. Now I prefer to unstring them as little as possible.

OK for a season, IMHO, but not the entire year, especially in the heat! But as stated above, each to his own.

I shoot my Schafer 1pc throughout the year, shooting a few times a week, and keep it strung. I have had no change in poundage or shooting qualities. I re- serve the B50 string if appears worn at the nocking point and keep it waxed. My Velcro(Black Widow) arrow rest and plate gets replaced about once a year.

I tend to leave mine strung when in regular use. Meaning I keep my go-to bow up on the wall by the door with a quiver of arrows ready and sneak in a few dozen backyard shots a day. Only unstring it for transport (so it's cased and not accidentally left in a hot car). Or to maybe tweak the tuning, swap out strings.
Got a buddy who hasn't unstrung his bow in over 12 years! Which reminds me... I need to be a friend and take him a new string. It's probably due!

I leave my Bear TD recurve strung when shooting daily with my quiver attached. Never noticed a problem in performance. I unstring my long bows after shooting on most occasions. The exception being when hunting for a three or four day stretch. To each his own.

ALL wood has memory. Be it in a glass sandwich or a self bow. That's all the info you need to make an informed decision IMO.

I make two exceptions to leaving my bow strung, travel involving hours on the road, and leaving it in a hot car or environment.I don't leave my strung bow hanging in the sun for long periods either.

Bows that I shoot on a regular basis, I never unstring them. If I'm not shooting a bow for an extended period, I leave it unstrung.
I have a 30+ year old Darton compound bow with wood core limbs that has never been unstrung, except to replace the string acouple of times. Still works great and draws 70#!!!

There are bows at the range where I occasionally work that have been strung for years and have shown no ill effects whatsoever. I have one hanging there for 2 years and I shot it a few days ago..no issues and it feels the same when I shoot it. That said, I generally unstring my hunting bows after I shoot them. No reason to leave them strung unless I am on a hunting trip

Ever wonder why we can take a twisted limb and bend it back into place by hand, without heat, quite often? Go ahead, leave them braced all you want fellers :)Everything has a shelf life and I'd soon not rush it.
