Most of Louie's bows were long.....genuine longbows. I had one that was 70" and around 55'ish pounds..can't exactly remember. I do know it was very smooth and pleasant to shoot. If I were to use a Hill style bow again it would probably be 70". I traded mine to Ed Barr at the W.V. Bowhunter Festival many moons ago (late 1980's).

His bows had I small top point. So if you couldn't reach an apple you could poke it with your bow. I've heard. Bottom was flat so you don't knock the tip off. Smart thinker. JF

My guess from the pictures and style of bow it was a late 70's model. I knew Louie personally and he told me he thought 3 lams was fine, but he put 5 laminations in a bow for marketing purposes. His personal bow "Hedge" that he made many of his amazing shots with, had 4 lams of osage and was around #85.
You have a fine longbow, built by a real longbow legend.

That is an original Armbruster Grevy made in '79. The first two numbers are the year made. One of the best Hill style longbows ever made.

I had 3, gave one that looked very much like the one in this thread to a good friend out East, had one of Louie's personal bows (heavy) that I traded to Steve Turay for one of his bows and have one left from the same 70's era, green glass, 46@28.
Personally, I think the ones built in the late 70's are some of the best he made.

I owned and shot a 70" 71# Zebra Grevy for a number of years in the 1990's. I used a padded loop FF string on the bow and when I moved down in bow weight a friend bought the bow. He is still shooting it today with the FF string and agrees it is his all time favorite Hill style longbow. I would buy another in a heart beat if one came up 50 to 55# and 70". Louie was a strong believer in long longbows.

Brace height: my 1982 Zebra Long Bow Guarantee card says "Brace this bow 6" to no more than 6 3/8" fistmele. (from top of handle to the string)" Older cards said 6 1/4" to 6 5/8" but were later hand-corrected to the shorter brace height.

My Zebra bow was all purplehart, 83#@ 28" 70" long. It was my target bow and I won the World Longbow Championship in 1980 in Alabama with it. (pic) I still have the bow but I don't shoot that weight anymore.

I have pictures of one of Louie's brochures from that era, I know his recommended brace height is in there (you are in the ball park.) I think that picture is stored on another drive somewhere. Someone on here might have it.

I had the priviledge of meeting Louie in the early 1980's, not long before he sold the business to Doug Duncan. His shop was by Beetown WI then. He was quite the character! At the time my uncle (same age as Louie) had come along with me when I visited Louie at his shop. They hit it off great, and soon Louie was breaking out some homemade wine to share with us!! I owned 2 of his longbows back then. Both were heavy weights. I shoot much lighter poundage now. One thing I remember about Louie was how he figured out out what length bow you would get. If you had a draw length around 28" you got a 70" bow. It seemed like back then it was tough to get him to make a bow shorter than 68".

Did Louis ever make a 68" Grevy ? I have a 70" Grevy @ 55# and have tried for years to find one a little shorter since I'm a short guy with a short draw length.

That's a good looking Zebra you got there.
I've got one that I received yesterday that's 58@28-70" I made a new b-50 string and tuned good to a bh of around six inches. Getting around 55 pounds at my 27" draw from it. It spits a Cedar arrow out pretty quick, with a very smooth draw.
Wished I'd of have known about these bows back in the early 80's When I got into shooting longbows. Would liked of of ordered one from Louie.
