I hear a lot of people who try to change from split to three under talk about three under being louder. In my own experience it seems that way to me as well. My question then is, if you switch from split finger to three under without making any setup adjustments, is it really louder? Or does it just seem louder to the shooter because of the new orientation of the nock and fingers to the ear of the shooter?

This may have already been answered somewhere else. My apologies if that is the case.

I shoot 3 under and I'd say it probably is louder with most bows. My boy can shoot my bows split and it is noticeably quieter. I had a Chinook that Dan tillered for 3 under and it was as quiet as a longbow. Still I don't have trouble getting them quiet enough to hunt with though.

I used to shoot a lot 2 under and to me it seemed quieter than 3 under, just a bit louder than 3 finger split...I switched to 2 finger split which seems to be just as quiet as 3 finger split...on the other hand the game animal is some distance in front of the bow making it very difficult to determine what it might hear, which is in fact the only thing that counts...I cannot remember the last time I jumped the string

When I shoot 3 under(which is rare)it's quite abit louder than my usual split.

I don't know why but most guys shoot 3 under they tend to pluck their fingers off the string instead of relaxing them like they do split. That's what makes it louder, not the fact your shooting 3 under. When you move your knock it changes the tiller so there's really no difference. I have to watch my release when I shoot 3 under or mine gets louder too. But if I get my back tension and get a good release its the same.

Has anyone recorded it both ways with the same bow and the same shooter? What kind of adjustments to tuning might one make if he switched to three under other than nock point that would affect the sound?

GLF, I think you may be hitting on something there that I seemed to notice today myself. Not 100% sure, but it makes sense to me. Thanks.

Is is not louder. It only sounds that way due to it being closer to the ear. I video tape all my shoots and on video there is no difference.

One bow is tillered for 3-under; the other, split. That usually means one is tillered at 0, the other is 1/8" positive. Some folks thinks that means something. I don't think it means much.

Some folks think shooting 3-under is louder than split. I don't.

I say tune the bow and shoot it. :^)

When the tuning is where it should be, it is no louder, BUT it will often be a different tone, which is often perceived as louder.

Definitely a different tone?

Thanks guys. I feel a little better about switching. I need to work on my release and back tension I think and I will be alright.

WHAT'S closer to the ear?

The nock is in a different place in relation to the ear in my case because i still anchor with my middle finger to the corner of my mouth. It is actually higher up and more in line with my ear hole. It may not be necessarily closer, but its different. So it may sound a little different to my ear.

I find it hard to believe that moving the nock of the arrow 1/2" HIGHER moves it appreciably closer to the ear which is what? 6" behind? Additionally, that any of it makes any noticeable amount of noise until it's well away from the ear... if not completely returned to brace... in which case I'd be more incined to agree with Rick about the tuning/timing... and tone.

When I have tried 3 under vs. my usual 2 under....it's louder to me. I have no idea whether it be my perception or reality. :o) Regards

It sounds louder to me. I also like having a finger above the arrow so that I won't poke out my only good eye.

If you have a smart phone you can download a decibel meter app- you will know for sure then.

I switched from 3 under to split because I was tired of loud bows, no matter arrow weight or crap added to my string. Some of the bows I build are quiet with nothing on the string and a common 10 GPP arrow, I couldn't make that happen shooting split.
