I been shootin wood arrows, and just like most fellows I make them. most of the time the points/target, stay glued on I use Bhoning amber colored hot melt, and clean the points real well but I had two come off in a 3D target this weekend.

I think Im going to try some type of epoxy any thoughts?

Loctite GO2 Glue seems to work good.WB

You're probably not cleaning the insides enough. Touch the wood taper and you left finger oil on the wood. Clean the inside of the tip with acetone and a Q-tip. I'll also clean the wood with a cloth and acetone.

I did the tapered end of the wooden shaft in the glue, heat the point, attach it and then dip the point end in cool water. Jawge http://georgeandjoni.home.comcast.net/~georgeandjoni/simplearrow.html

You may be using too much and not distributing it around the taper. I rarely lose points, but I use just a "skin" of hot melt, and turn the head on to distribute the glue evenly as possible so not to get air bubbles a the tip. Also make sure your tapers fill the point well. It's not the glue, it's how you are using it, or how your tips are tapered. I even use cheap low temp craft glue.

I took a short piece of tapered wood shaft and glued a bit of sandpaper around the taper. With a few twists inside the point, it is roughened a bit. Then I swab it out with a Q-tip and denatured alcohol. This helps the glue stick material to adhere better to the steel. I haven't lost a tip since I started roughening up the steel.

I got one of those brushes that is tapered from 3 Rivers. Works like a bore brush, cleans the inside oif the point and roughs it up also. I use the hot melt from Black Widow. I use slow cure epoxy for anything I want to stay together forever. If you never plan on removing points I would use the epoxy. Hot melt glue becomes brittle after a few years and points will come off. Happened to me on some arrows I had as display and then decided to use.

What ever glue you use rough up the point and clean before installing the point. You'll have better results.

I always heated the head like Georges way, and a lot of glue sqwishes out when I pressed the heads in. clean heads with acetone first on the inside. I guess a pin may help but never needed it on mine.

I've been shooting woodies for over 30 years and found it rare to loose a point. This past weekend I was shooting with another gent, we both had 4 arrows each. By the 7th target I had lost all points and he 3. Some of these repaired targets are a booger. I smeared on a tad of electrical lube on to the tip of the 2 spares I had in my truck and had a 2 finger pull for the next 100 shots.

The brown wood glue sticks for hot glue guns are better than Bohning. These are specifically labeled as for wood and are not the same as the all-purpose hot glue gun sticks. For epoxy, JB Weld.

Go to the low temp, Cool Blue stick. Melts at a lower temp and adheres far better than the clear, amber stuff. I have used it on several lost tips for guys shooting woods.

I use it on all my point inserts as it is easy to remove from carbons as well. Heat a tip, screw into the insert, and the heat transfers to the glue without damaging the carbon.

When I shot woods, sometimes you will maybe loose a point.I found the amber colored hot melt too brittle and wouldn't hold that well on woods.Used it a lot for aluminum for inserts. What I did on mine was to get a NPT 1/16-27 pipe tap and tap some threads into the points to give it some teeth.Clean well and use Saunder's hot melt or Easton's hot melt, holds better and more pliable and not brittle.I never lost a point after mounting them this way.
