While doing a refinish on an old B/P Cougar,I noticed a what appears to be "stock" small groove cut into the shelf directly beneath the shelf rug. Have anyone else ever seen this or has it been modified by a previous owner? Pic is enclosed.

Looks like a slip on the sanding machine during construction. Nothing more.

Okay....probably just a coincidence that the scratch follows the arrows flight path. Would a small trench make a difference........in the paradox?

That's what I thought at first, but the cut isn't quite parallel to the riser. False cut was my guess.

It was done by a sander hence the "burn"....or a really dull saw blade. It takes a little heat to change the color of the wood like that. Not nearly so much in maple as other woods.
The builder likely saw no need in sanding it out as it was going to be covered by shelf material. No need in over thinking this one.

That looks like a pretty small cut made by a power saw of some sort similar to one you might attach to a Dremmel tool.
If it was done by accident or intentionally, who knows? :)
