Traditional way Part 1
The forest primeval, American chestnut, basswood, yellow poplar growing to amazing heights and girth in the north facing coves of the Appalachians. A wanderer is making his way through dressed as if he were an Indian but instead he is a white settler from the valley of the tiskelwah River ( River of the fat elk) shortened down today to just the elk River. He carries a Pennsylvania made long rifle in .45 caliber. He has his possibles over his left shoulder. Over his right he has a quiver full of hand made arrows and a homemade hackberry bow, made from a sapling he cut himself on the banks of the new River. He is in this cove to make a living. He is a hunter but he is hunting a plant. General George Washington has put out a call for all settlers, surveyors, scouts to dig and ship as much ginseng as they can. It needs to be gotten to the ports in the east so the valuable root can be sold to Cathay to fund the growing revolution. This scene played out time after time during this period of our history and it is a connection that many of us that live in the mountains today still carry. We dig ginseng and sell it to support families, hunting trips or just to pay bills. The history of this plant is colorful and ties directly into a traditional way of life. I currently dig every fall as well as plant upwards of 10,000 seed every fall to help my retirement in 20 years. Daniel Boone and his settlers were known to have dig and shipped tons of sang over the mountains and to the east. It is a beautiful and infectious plant. Once you look for sang and dig it you get an urge in your blood to turn "native". Ginseng - it's just a part of our traditional history! Can't wait to have my bow and quiver on my back, roaming, looking for sang and a fat deer or bear for the freezer around the 1st of October! See you in the woods!

Definitely not sang. Usually the red berries don't hit on Sang until at least September 1 depending on where you are.

In some states harvesting wild ginseng is regulated or illegal on public lands. Check the rules in your state.

The lure of big money for ginseng root also creates many poachers who rob it from public land like State and National Forests....not to mention private land where signs mean nothing to them. The ones who "plant more than they pick" are small relative to the ones who pick and run even before the berries are ripe. There are lots of traditional things/ways that come from the old ways. One of those is knowing what is right an what is wrong...when it's picking and when it's stealing.
There are those who can get permits to pick in many areas of public land, but that isn't the case here in Pa. So pick your ginseng, but to it ethically and do it legally. Make sure you are on your own land, have permission on other land, and not just looking for it where you can find it.

Hunting sang is almost as addicting as casting a fly line or sending an arrow downrange.
