I have heard for forever pick one & stay with it. Some even suggest you can't be proficient with both. I don't agree & I like both so I shoot both. I've been shooting a nice recurve lately & tonight I'm going to switch to a nice longbow. Both are almost identical in weight. Let's not argue, but I'm curious if others like & shoot both? Thanks

From: Shorthair Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I have selfbows, longbows and recurves. I tend to pick one and stick with it for a single hunting season at minimum...so whatever I take off rack the next 30 days will be with me on whitetail opener 15 Aug through 1 Jan.....then next if not same bow will be my small game and turkey through May....also for hogs in late January but usually shoot same as for whitetail since I like more than couple weeks to get re-familiar with another bow.

Some guys can go back and forth with great accuracy...me, I need to get to where my grip, hand position, draw, everything is second nature again as the more I NOTICE THINGS the worse I shoot. LOL

keep em sharp,

ron herman

I keep the ones that shoot to the same point of aim, be it a longbow or recurve. I am an instinctual shooter, so I look at the spot on the animal or target, draw, anchor, release. I have several bows of each type that, even though I have not shot a particular bow for some time, the first shot at 20 yards is usually a bulls eye.

From: Panzer
Date: 23-Jun-15

I can go back and forth with certain bows. It's all about the grip for me and I prefer a low wristed grip.

From: redheadlvr
Date: 23-Jun-15

Sure do. Several recurves and a few longbows.

Longbow, recurve and self bow, but before hunting season I pick one and stick with it.

Have a good one

From: Barber
Date: 23-Jun-15

I shoot both and have no problem switching back and forth. I do shoot 3-4 days a week and shoot both weekly.

From: LBshooter
Date: 23-Jun-15

I shoot both and hunt with both. I'll alternate bows after a kill or just because. I don't let the mental side mess me up, pick it up and shoot, period.

From: LuckyStrike
Date: 23-Jun-15

I shoot both... 50# recurve 53# longbow.

From: bodymanbowyer
Date: 23-Jun-15

I love my longbows and also shoot some old recurves. But when it comes close to hunting season I'll pick 1 and stick with it. I shoot at least 6 out of 7 days a week. Sometimes twice a day.JF

From: Dry Bones
Date: 23-Jun-15

I like both. Roland Jenkins recurve 49# and Steve Abbott Longbow at 64#

I shoot and hunt with both. I may shoot one in the morning and another in the afternoon. They're in the same general weight range and my arrows are about 11-12 gpp so they shoot pretty much the same. This past year, I killed an elk with an ACS hybrid, a deer with a Morrison Shawnee recurve and a turkey with a Bear TD recurve. Life's too short to shoot only one bow.

From: Drewster
Date: 23-Jun-15

I shoot recurves, longbows and self bows......just love to shoot. I'll likely hunt with a recurve and maybe one of my self bows.

From: camodave
Date: 23-Jun-15

I shoot both both right handed and left handed

I can, give me any bow and I will figure it out. Once you realize you can do that you can. At least that's what I found out about myself.

From: strshotx
Date: 24-Jun-15

I like to shoot them all, longbows, recurves,ILF with elevated rests&plungers,Hill's and selbows.I have been doing this for years! If you have good form and well matched arrows you can shoot either one good.I would go through a whole 3D season form June through September and shoot a different bow each week.

From: HUMPY

I shoot both ! more fun for me ! Hump

From: Knifeguy

I also shoot both, but I shoot recurves a little better. Lance.

From: Jeff Durnell Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 24-Jun-15

I usually shoot selfbows, but also shoot bamboo backed bows, and on rare occasion shoot glass/wood laminated longbows and recurves.

I've found that I can jump back and forth between bows often, same day even, as long as they are balanced similarly, grips are similar, and their cast is similar.... all within my control since I make my own.

From: pockets
Date: 24-Jun-15

I own and shoot both longbows and recurves. I do prefer longbows however.

From: cyrille

I do shoot both. However I'm partial to the A.S.L.

From: Dazza

I have and shoot both. How the arrows come out has much more to do with me than the shape of the limbs! Same grip, same arrows, same everything.

From: Stykman
Date: 24-Jun-15

I like variety and change so have both and shoot both. That's a big part of trad archery for me-learning to shoot and shoot well both types. A goal is to take game with each bow I have. Thankfully, here in NJ, I have the ability to do this, what with the liberal bag limits for deer in certain zones. Being completely retired also helps a lot toward achieving that.

From: horseman
Date: 24-Jun-15

Shoot both new to the game . The recurve to me seems to be more forgiving . I do think it is valuable to learn what adjustment's to make to get the arrow to go where you are looking.

From: Bernie P.
Date: 24-Jun-15

I think where you can get into trouble is when you shoot a lot of different bows.Of the 3 I have I shoot 1 about 80% of the time and exclusively about 2 months before deer season.

I have 1 reflex deflex long bow and 4 wood recurves and a metal riser takedown Martin. I shoot the Martin with 30# limbs the best. All the rest are 35 to 40# range. Randy

From: Tom McCool
Date: 24-Jun-15

Like both. Not to hard to adjust.

From: Roadrunner
Date: 24-Jun-15

I do. I find that it doesn't take me but a few shots with a different bow to be shooting just as bad as I was with the other one.

From: Gramps
Date: 24-Jun-15

I also shoot both, I prefer to hunt with my recurves but the majority of my target shooting with a long bow. As mentioned earlier I can shoot any bow fairly decent just give me a few minutes to figure out their characteristics and we are good to go.

From: bndhunter
Date: 24-Jun-15

I prefer a longbow but have recently picked up a recurve. The recurve has almost the same grip as my favorite longbow and shoots to about he same point on.

I bought my 1st longbow this year. A BamaBows 45# @ 26". Prior to this I was strictly a Bob Lee recurve shooter. I still have my Bob Lee's and love them. My goal is to kill a deer with the longbow this year. I enjoy shooting all my bows.

"I have heard for forever pick one & stay with it. Some even suggest you can't be proficient with both"

If you have solid Form you can shoot both equally well, I've won National titles with Compound, Longbow and Recurve and World/Euro titles with Longbow and Recurve.

I might have sometimes put myself at a competitive disadvantage by swapping bow styles but I think it's also important to look for new challenges and have as much FUN as possible.

From: Fisher
Date: 24-Jun-15

I shoot both recurve and longbow equally well. I prefer both. About a month before hunting season, I select one bow for the duration.

From: nomo
Date: 24-Jun-15

I can shoot both and own both. I prefer LBs though.

From: AustinEvans
Date: 24-Jun-15

I don't give a second thought to going from longbow to recurve whenever I want. Even during hunting season. Although 90 percent of the time you will catch me with a selfbow during hunting season. They are so quiet it's almost unfair. Alot of times if you miss you will get another shot off due to their silence. I've had many people tell me they didn't really hear the bow, just the feathers from the arrow. Ever since shooting primitive equipment I haven't had a single deer jump the string....

My recurve and longbow have similar grips, and I can shoot both equally great, or crappy depending on the day. My longbow is a few pounds heavier, but they shoot same arrows, just depends on my mood.

I shoot both at once! Recurve riser with Longbow limbs, best of both worlds!

From: Iktomi

Both. Cut my archery teeth on selfbows, shot them almost exclusively for 20+ years, but the last few years I've been shooting recurve more than selfbows/longbows. They are all good.

From: UnderTheRadar

Both for me as well! Firefly longbow and static recurve. Recently, I've been shooting better with the longbow, but not long ago it was the recurve. Who knows??? But, I like them both......a LOT!

I shoot a Schafer 1pc recurve, and a Hill longbow. Imwill stick with one bow for a hnting seaso.

From: MississippiBelle

I have both....I don't shoot my recurves much any more. My favorite all-time longbow is my 21Century...sweetest bow ever. I use it for target/tournament shooting. Too long for me to hunt with out of my ladder stand or ground blind... 70" long .......not sure which longbow I will hunt with yet. Either my Black Widow or my custom takedown. This will be my first time hunting with traditional bow. Marsha

I shoot both. Bear recurves and Centaur longbow

From: rpk@work
Date: 30-Jun-15

I'll shoot anything most of the year. Hill Tembo, 21st Century, Big Jim's Buffalo and Thunderchild, Bear Super Kodiak, Kodiak Mag, Toelke Kestrel, Samick Sage, and whatever somebody else will let me shoot. It doesn't take me more than a few rounds to get used to a different bow. I do think I shot better when I only had a couple of bows, just didn't have as much fun.

After Denton Hill, I do concentrate on the bow I'm going to hunt with. (mostly).

From: swarbt119
Date: 30-Jun-15

I shoot both, just grab whatever when I'm heading out to shoot. But from now until bow season starts, I'll concentrate on one bow because when season starts I want it to be second nature, nothing to think about.

From: Frank V
Date: 30-Jun-15

Thanks everyone I still like them both & will continue to shoot both.

Never could see a big difference, I shoot one just as bad as the other ! Have been partial the last few years to short, R/D longbows though, like the treadway black swamp, and mike Millers "shortbow".

Hard for me to find time to shoot either. Shoot mostly longbow when I do because they out perform my recurve.

I shoot both but mostly favour my recurve.I don't shoot compounds but those little Korean style horse bows are nice too.I have a hankering for one of those English Victorian style long bows.I would prefere Yew but one of those tri lams is a better option as they don't cost an arm and a leg. OSR

First bow was a Longbow, lemonwood. Then I got into recurves for 10 or 20 years, last twenty it has been almost entirely longbows, not the hybrid type, real ones. I still have a few of both, but I sold most the of the recurves off. I don't really believe in shooting a lot of bows. I do best if I stick with my favorite.

Fox 50's-style Recurve, R/D Wes Wallace Royal Longbow, and Howard Hill Big 5 Longbow. Love to shoot and hunt with all three. Suspect I like all three equally because of each one's unique look and feel. The only difference in shooting them is the type wrist I shoot with the recurve versus the two longbows.

A longbow limb hybrid, like that Shawnee, is really no different than a recurve to shoot. It's a longbow...technically.
