The shield decal (versus the drawn bow logo), and the absence of "AMO" before the length, makes me think it's earlier than that... by four or five years maybe?

If it has the knife window where it curves above the shelf faceing you I think it's a 1962 0r 1963.. Nice color glass also! I like that knife style the best and yours look awesome..

Yep that's the knife window and if you ask Larry Hatfield he can give you a more accurate date but I am really thinking a 63.. Does it have the little limb tips ?

George , I read the posts but didn't look to see who posted it..Thanks for pointing that out George ..I was thinking 63 but I would like to know if Larry knows just how many years and what years did they actually make the knife window design? I like the way they rounded over the sight window and took that edge off..Still it's a lovely Howatt..

I have a knife edge Diablo that Larry said was a 63, and a Catalina that he said was a 62 and the serial numbers correspond with those dates. Bob W.

sometimes, if you know nothing about the company at the time a bow was built, it may be better to not post at all. don't see the point?

Curtis I knew you would like the way it shoots and I bet you found a new love in the Howatts like the rest of us who appreciate them as well..I also want to Thank Larry for always willing to share what he knows as "Fact" and glad he is unselfish to share with us.. I also love the Howatts and want to learn as much as I can about them...I have had many Traditional bows and the ones I really love to shoot and tinker with are the vintage bows from 40 or 50 years ago...There are many bowyers that put a lot of time in a bow now but I know back in the day the Howatts were made with people who actually loved to go to work and put pride in what they built or designed.. They didn't have the computers then and all the designing gear but they used there "God givin talent" with their hands and brains to design the bows they made..I call that "Custom" and yes they may have had to put out a certain amount of bows and use some sort of machinery to shape them but I bet their hands touched about every part of the bows they made and when they finally went out the door to the customer or archery shop they didn't worry if a person would say it isn't a "Custom" made bow back then..It was a "Custom made" bow in my way of thinking! Thank you Larry and to all who made such a "Fine Bow"...God Bless!

keefers, at the time that bow was made the only machine in the shop was a 6X36 sears belt sander. we used it to knock the glue off the limbs and tip the bow out. imagine doing that with bow lengths to 72". the rest of the bow and tips were shaped with a 14" tapered wood rasp and files. we got the letter the customer wrote to order the bow and saw it through glue-up and into the finish room. we shaped the grip to drawings and samples the customer sent with the order. no extra charge. most "custom" makers use more jigs and sanders than howatts ever had to shape risers. we did it by hand , free style until the last. and i find it amusing that most of them make stock bows, the very thing that made howatts a "factory" bow in many peoples minds. more bows are/were made as clones of howatt bows than you could shake a stick at. jim brackenberry, for instance, came to the shop and made drawings and studied our laminations when he was starting out. he put his own touch on the risers and some other things, but our hunter was the basis of his first bow.

Of all bows I like recurves best... and of all recurves I like Howatts best... and of all Howatts I like those 1962-1963-ish Ventura-styled bows best, with their knife-edge sight windows and rosewood lay-up risers. When you think about the performance, style, durability and history wrapped up in one of those-- Ventura, Monterey, Hunter, Hi-Speed, whatever-- the prices they sell for seem insanely low to me.
Thank heavens for all of the Grayling groupies who prefer Bear hunting; keep right at it... Pdiddly and the rest of us will take all these nasty old "production" Howatts off your hands.

Thank You Larry and that is Truly Custom to me ..Larry this may have been asked several times before and forgive me if I am asking a question that you may have answered more then once but How long and what years were those knife windows made? I have a Diablo that was gifted to me and I really love the rounded over curve on that bow..It also has the smaller limb tips did you do those or someone else? When I went hunting with mine this past year I sat in my ground blind and just spent hours looking at all the curves and little extras that were made into the riser.. For instance the curved area directly above the thumb knuckle so your thumb wouldn't touch the shelf while placing your hand on the grip..Some Howatts have that and some don't.. It is hard to tell but Curtis's bow looks like it has it as well...Those little extras are things that make it "CUSTOM" as I see it..

Deadringer I'm with you Curtis was showing a great bow he just got and someone mentioned it wasn't custom and that kind of stirred the pot and I for one went in defense mode and voiced my opinion on the Howatt bows .. They are a gem to shoot that's for sure and a piece of Archery history and I am sure glad Larry is always willing and able to help us know more about a bow shop that once was around..Now Curtis do you have any pics of the tips on this bow and how do you like it ? Is your arm tired yet from shooting it all day?

I'm with Kerry (crookedstix) and the other Howatt enthusiasts on this one. I have close to a dozen Howatt's in my collection that's over 80 tuned and ready to shoot recurves and they are, quite simply, top drawer.
Consider what Larry wrote. The Howatt production facility, equipment, the bowyers and their collective knowledge and history was the perfect balance between mass production and custom. There were never too many bowyers at one time, a situation that would have allowed quality control to slide and " what worked and what didn't" not to be passed on.
The more bows an individual makes the better they get, especially when working in a facility with equally talented designers and workers.
My Howatt's have soul and character yet do the job they were designed to, embodying the essential tenet of " form follows function." Other bows do have these characteristics as as well but not with the depth and across so many models and years that Howatt's do.
The DH's are inherently easier to tune and smoother and faster than the majority of the other bows in my collection.
I'll be moving out some of the herd in the near future but my Hunter's, Hi-Speeds, Diablo's, Mamba's, Palomar's etc are safe in the corral!
