I have a recurve bow that I got from a old friend. He sprayed painted the hole bow Como. I wanted it back to its self without all that paint so I started to sand it. I am stuck on trying to figure out how to get the fiberglass to look good again. I am also looking for a the fred bear coin, it must have fallen off back in the day. If anyone his any experience or any tips it would really help. Thanks Doug

You'll probably have to apply some finish to get it looking good again. Since you sanded the paint off, you probably took some original finish off, that may be why it looks the way it does. If so, you might as well sand it until all the old finish is off and everything looks sanded evenly, then apply some new finish. Nice bow, looks like a Grizzly. The coin shouldn't be hard to find either. Good luck.

Go to the auto store and get some Ultra-Fine wet sanding paper and use a rubber block to wet sand the glass to a smooth, even finish. Sand back and to in a straight line along the back and belly of the limbs. You didn't want to take much off, just clean up the scratches from the paint removal. Apply some Minwax polyurethane with a rag, rubbing it in the same direction as the sanding you did. Let dry 24 hours and buff with steel wool, repeat. You can get poly to come out like glass like that if you work at it.

Sorry Doug, all I see is a good looking borderlab :) like they said above sand with some smoother paper. No coarser than 320 or 400 and reapply a finish and it'll look like new. Jeff F

Should I use the polyurethane on the fiberglass also. What I am asking is it okay to polyurethane the whole bow. Thanks for all the help had a hard time finding some answers online.

Yes, the whole bow. Tape up the coin hole though in case you come up with a coin. There was a guy on the internet who made them but I forgot his name. Something like kurtble or something like that.

Doug,

You've got the first requisite -good (furry) MORAL SUPPORT!

I've refinished MANY bows and the best finish I've found is BIRCHOOD CASEY'S GUNSTOCK TRUE OIL (as recommended to me by Bowdoc). Easier and better looking than Fuller Plast, Thunderbird, polyurathane and many more!

Use a CABINIT SCRAPER to remove that old finish and paint on the limbs.

Check out the thread showing a complete refinish I did last fall:

I second Tru-oil, good on almost everything, arrows, bows, gun stocks and such.

Yep, tru-oil is a good product, easy to use, and smells good too.

Nothing wrong with a nice hand rubbed tru oil finish. It has nice traditional look about it. Jeff F
