So I have these two Kodiaks... I think one is a '61 and the other is a '62. I know the grey one is a '62, but I am not sure about the other. I have never held a '61 and the few pics I have found show a very green glass. The glass appears to be closer to green than grey... but not as green as I was expecting. So what is it... a '61 or a '62 ?

Please help me confirm the years of these two Kodiaks!

61 identification can be tricky since they were made in several configurations...the one I have is a later one with walnut sandwiching a purple heart I beam...the earlier ones were Rosewood, some solid and some I beam I think, but there were apparently a lot of delaminating issues and the Walnut/Purpleheart was the fix...the green of the 1961 is, I think, the original Grayling Green...if you can find a new model Grayling Green Super Kodiak to compare the colour should be the same (allowing for over 50 years of fading)...one thing to consider is that both of those bows appear to have the pewter coin that was painted partially black...you will see Bear bows with coins from previous years but never with coins from the next year (sort of because my late issue 61 has the black on pewter coin)...I have a feeling those are both 1962 bows...which btw is a good thing...we know for sure the 1962 Kodiaks used the good 3M Scotchply glass...a 61 may or may not have had it

Nice looking Kodiaks, from what I can tell by mainly the tips, is they are both 62' Kodiaks. You are right the 61' has a lighter green, sort of Avocado shade and tips are rounder. Are both sight windows Rosewood ? The shades of limbs could vary by the yellowing of the varnish over the years.

Tips are a tricky way to identify old Bears...Wade Phillips once posted a picture of 10 1960 Kodiaks side by side and all of the tips, grips and limb profiles look a bit (or quite a bit) different...there was a lot more bowyer leeway on tip configuration back then...when I get home I will take a picture of my 61 for comparison...still so far the vote is 2 to 0 for them being 1962

Here's a pic of the sight window side... Both are rosewood and no I-Beams here.

The riser overlays in one of the previous pics look definitely like different color glass to me. ???

hmmmm....

I vote '62 based on glass color. I have had quite a few 61's and they are all much brighter than that.

Yep, both are '62s.

Well that didn't take long! haha

Looks like the consensus is that they are both '62 models!

Thanks guys!

I'm still not sure..... Think you better send them to me for closer inspection;-)

the one with the holes drilled in it has had the limbs sanded obviously... it could use a refinish job for sure.... love the wood in those '62s... cool bows.

poor pic I know but these 3 are 1961 Kodiaks. All 3 have been refinished... hard to find an all original model from that year.

The Grey '62 has these 'ripples' on one of the limbs near the tip. I do not know what they are.

They are not the finish... they are part of the fiberglass. The little ridges are covered with the original finish. The fiberglass is not cracked or splintered... just has these little raised ridges. It kinda looks like 'wrinkled saran wrap' if that makes sense. It shoots great and they have never gotten worse... they look original to me. ??

Anyone know what they are?

Both of yours are '62's.

I shoot one of each, a '61 Kodiak with a fine grained rich honey colored bubinga and a '62 with its dark Brazilian rosewood riser. Both are a real pleasure to shoot, but prefer the '61 even though I have to put up with a few typical stess lines and the '62 has none. The '61 was my go to bow until I acquired a 63-inch '62 Kodiak Special. Now it's the best of the best, and a whole lot better than the rest.

Notice the coin on both HBK's bow and mine...that is what a 1962 coin ought to look like

And Grayling Green in the sunlight

DDave

The finish has yellowed more on one causing the greenish tint. That and the tips that were only shaped that way in '62. They are BOTH 62's.

From: SB

Original" Grayling Green" is not the same shade as the newer bows. It was more of a pale pea green color in '61.

Agree both are 62 Kodiaks

It would be nice if someone would post a picture of a new Grayling Green bow in the sunlight to compare it to my 1961...to me that bow is a pretty dark shade of green

SK with Grayling Green, Sorry not sunny

From: camodave
Date: 13-Apr-15

Thanks so much and it was not sunny when I took the pictures either...it is just that I find natural, preferably on a cloudy day, light is the only way to compare colours realistically...I would have to say that colour is very close to that on my bow...I got very lucky and have one with virtually the original colour even though it is the original finish...I am not a big fan of green glass but I kind of like that stuff, and I love the way my 61 shoots
