Just curious to find who prefers shooting recurves over a longbow and why? I like the recurve mainly because of the grip (high wrist). Leaves little room for error on dripping the bow. I find with longbows, the dished, locator, or hill grips, or 50's style recurves, I never can get a consistent grip so it can affect my accuracy. What say you?

Same here so far. Really can't stand the straight longbow grip. However If I were to get a number two bow it would be a three piece takedown with a high wrist grip....preferably a reverse limb connection like a Hill Country bow.

You know, the way I see it is they are not really different anymore. You can get "longbows" with a high wrist grip, you can get recurve with any grip you want, you can get both in any mass weight, ect ect. They perform almost the same, recurve might be a little quicker with light arrows as a rule, longbows might be slightly quieter in some cases. But not by much on either count.
I feel like there are tons of great bow designs and brands out there. Some feel they shoot a certain kind better, some really do shoot a certain kind better, but really anyone can learn to shoot something else if they commit to doing so.
Really boils down to what you like. I've shot a Black Widow recurve for 10 years because I got a great deal on it, it works for me, and I cannot yet afford to buy new $1k plus bows on a regular basis. Heck yes I think its a great bow and love shooting it. I've had a few firsts with it too, so there's a little sentimental factor in there too. In spite of all that I aknowlegde there are tons of other qulity bows out there. Guys have been working on bow design for thousands of years- nobody is going to come out with a bow that is that much better than the next in every category. Find one that floats your boat and learn how to shoot it right.

My "longbow" is a navajo apache, which has a reverse handle and Is highly deflexed/reflexed, and is very close in shape to my '59 Bear Polar when both are unstrung. I have only shot one true longbow, and I did not care for the handshock. I do, however, enjoy my navajo apache and numerous recurves I own, so I guess I am a recurve man.

Me. I like the high grip & apeed - but my longbow was a Hill style one piece and not the more revcurveish style.
I have shot those and approve - just don't come across them at the prices I can get vintage great recurves at.

Love my recurves. Like my long bows. Recurve is more natural to my style of shooting. Tend to be more upright with a long bow due to the grip. Enjoy shooting both and am slowing improving my long bow shooting.

I shot Longbow for 14 years to a good competitive level, due to tendon damage in my ring finger which made the hand shock of Longbows painful I switched to ILF Recurves, the mass and use of finger sling allows me pain free shooting, I've enjoyed the change, first year big learning curve figuring out tune and arrows and I'm very much seduced by the extra speed and accuracy ;-)
Last year I switched to the dark art of Stringwalking, it's been really interesting and kinda fun that you can keep a respectable score with the guys using sighted.
I still love my Longbows, when the weather is warm will I shoot them but after around 7-10 days it starts to get too uncomfortable to shoot.

I shot longbows since about 1982 until about a 1 1/2 years ago than went back to recurves. I did it mainly because of an injury I sustained to my left hand which caused a sometimes sharp pain in between my thumb and pointer finger. Tried a recurve and pain was abated so just went for and happy I did.

I like recurves better because of the heavier physical weight of the riser and the med/high grip. I have tried a few longbows in the past like the Bear Montana and Martin Savannah, but sold/traded them. So.....I have decided to try something a little different in a longbow :-)

Try as I might to love longbows?...my hands are too old to take the shock and no matter how hard I tried to love them?...there was never ever a longbow grip I got along with. ..that said?...yes...I know...these days you can get heavy riser longbows with full thumb rest pistol grips...but to me?...now what you have is a recurve with longbow limbs...or another way of saying it?...a very smooth and quiet yet long limbed, slow shooting recurve.
I seek comfort and efficiency in a compact package these days...some of the shorter R/D hybrids come close but why settle for close when you can have "There"...as in everything's there...comfort, speed and stealth. :)
But that's just the conclusion I've drawn in my journey.

I like and shoot both but not the Hill style longbows. I know some don't consider the new type of longbows as longbows unless they have the right grip and D shape. And by the way, it's called proof-reading. Don't think it's up to the mods to make corrections to our typing or syntax. They wouldn't have time for anything else.

I am way more consistant with recurves. I tried like crazy for about 2 years to master Two Hill straight grip bows- killed one deer even. The inconsisrancy drove me crazy. Good one day, beyond terrible the next. Sold both. I could not get the grip the same day to day. If i could solve that problem i would shoot them as i like the simplicity and lightness and quiet shooting.

Recurve! I have owned a few longbows but I just shoot the recurve better and I can get a recurve in a shorter length for shooting out of my blind, and I feel the recurve has less hand shock.
I may try a R/D longbow here soon to see what there like, and to just add another bow to my collection :)

Like most that started in the 60s I began with recurves. Had about a 10 year fling with longbows in the 90s but went back to recurves for a few reasons. It takes me back to my beginnings and they are a pleasure to shoot. From time to time I pull out some longbows thinking I should give them time but stick with the recurves.

I've shot longbows off and on for several years and I have shot recurves consistently through 30+ years of shooting trad. I sold my last longbow several years ago but recently got the itch again and I picked up a Northern Mist Superior, 64" and 44# at 28 and I've been shooting it quite a lot.
This Superior is the first LB that I've shot that has absolutely no hand shock and after fiddling around to find what the bow likes I'm shooting it really well. It's quiet, a delight to stump shoot and as I age and the arthritis shows up more often than not, it is a great choice for my preferences.
I also have a pair of short recurves that I'm fond of….a 52" Tom Kelly (52@28) and a Toelke Kestrel (40@28). Excellent little ground blind/ghillie suit bows.

As Phil alluded to, many of us started out with recurves and that is where our real passion is. Matter of fact, when I started bowhunting in 1965, manufactured longbows were few and far between, not like today where they are behind every bush. I still love carrying a longbow, and I do lots of times.

I'm another one that started with the recurve in the 60's, switched to the longbow for a couple of decades, and now find myself havng gone full circle, to be more proficient wth the recurve after having to reduce my draw weight. I still find the longbow to be more charismatic, collecting and shooting them on a regular basis.

I've never shot a longbow. I can't say anything bad about them. I don't really have any desire to shoot one.
When I was a kid, about 6, we had a family friend who made his own laminated recurve bows. From that time on, with the exception of some compound bow years, it's always been recurve for me.

Hi all. Started with a Martin Diablo 40# limbs 2 years ago. Just shoot local 3D and backyard target. Read a lot on forums and got 30# limbs for it. Better! Then bought a 52" wood recurve we have yet to identify. Real nice bow. I pull about 24.5" draw so it is about 27# at my draw. Done pretty good with it. I now have a White Wolf Hunter Long Bow, 35#@26 and I am loving it. I guess you would call it a hybrid reflex, deflex design with a high pistol grip. I shoot better every time I practice. I have no desire to ever even try a compound. Blued steel and wood for me!!! Sig 9

Recurves in the past and recurves for me now, But..........
In the past it was an ugly thing for me when the longbows I saw were traditional D type over 53 years ago so recurves with fine grained rosewood were and still are my thing. Looks always was the main consideration for me, even over performance, and in my opinion, recurves just looked cool.
Now, times have changed with fantastic bow woods avaialble and longbows have become things of beauty. Best looking bow and wood combination I have ever seen on any bow is the 42 lb quilted maple bow the Tolkes now have on their site. The quilted maple or tigerstriped maple just looks like it is married to that very bow and no other wood would work as well to highlight Dan's art work. The bow looks like it's worth a million dollars. Might be a change coming?

I like, own and shoot both. I find I can get comfortable with any bow if I spend time with it and don't arbitrarily keep switching between them. I learned on HH style longbows but by the time I was in high school I was shooting a Ben Pearson takedown Bushmaster my dad gave me. Currently am shooting a HH Tembo but just bought another older Martin/Howatt recurve that I'm looking forward to shooting. Variety is the spice of life, or something like that.
