Who shoots em? Likes-dislikes let's hear it!

When I took up bowhunting for deer in the 60's, it was the head I was told to use. Unfortunately I never killed anything with them, but I did scare a few whitetail. I lost everyone I bought.

Today, they seem kind of pricey and more a collector head, but confident they do the job.

I Plan on using them this coming season. If I can get some. Been trying to trade for some on classifieds. Not much luck yet. I was only able to score one from arrowchucker so far. I want to use them off a 45# Pearson Bushmaster recurve.

I have not used them in the woods, but have mounted a couple and experimented with tuning and sharpening. I was able to get them flying well pretty easily (I also did not experience the legendary "hiss of death" with them). They sharpened easily as the steel is somewhat soft. No failures with just routine shooting into a block type target. I doubt that they are as tough as the triple layer brazed integral ferrule heads, and doubt they hold an edge as well as many, but I'm sure they will do the job just fine when tuned and put in the right spot.

Hey tonto59 , It only takes one! I got an old Super Hilbre once and wanted to shoot a bear with it. It was the only one I could get but I sharpened it to a razor edge and when the bear showed up...... Zip thru lungs dead bear! Sharpen it so sharp it scares you and send it thru your critter of choice . It will do the job!

Got one from an old friend that he put tru a hog out on the islands off CA 40 years ago. Also have a new dozen that awaits a hog hunt of my own

I have some also. I have them sharp but end up using my Bears. Yes, they are up there in price especially the heavier ones. No doubt reason I leave them wrapped up in tackle box.

Check out the thread: Did you ever hear the " Hiss Of DEATH"?

From: Stealth2 Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member

I have 6, four are mounted on my hunting arrows. I killed game with them, open a large hole. I mount mine horizontal, 5" full helical feathers and they fly great without the "Hiss".

Have a few dozen. Big head, easy to get razor sharp. What's not to like. Never had the "hiss of death"

I tried them decades ago and they whistled like a dove.

No interest in using them. Cool looking, and some collectors value. But, a lot of better heads available, more affordable and, easier to get.

Read the link above. It's a guy who makes a real good copy of the deadhead. It has pics and prices of a couple different heads he makes.

I put the word out there. That I was looking for some Dead Heads. And Dam! If a fellow waller didn't come through. There is 5 large and 5 small Dead Head Being sent to N.J. today. I got several Pm's on where to look and who to ask. Amazing simply amazing. Thank you Arrowchucker for the good luck head. I will mark that one. Because that will be mounted on my first arrow. And a big thank you Tom for helping me out. And letting go some of your Dead Heads much appreciated. I'm excited about trying them off my Bushmaster. If all goes well this year. I plan on hunting with Fred Arnold's self bow the first part of the season. Then using the Bushmaster the second part of the season. How many days?;-)

Here is a picture of the small one. Does anyone have a picture of a large one and small one together? So we can see the size difference. Thanks

I use them for certain situations. The wide ones leave a good immediate blood trail. I have heard of stories way back in the 70s about Deadheads deflecting on angling rib hits. I heard of that with one hit with the Deadhead copy, Dreadhead, more recently. They fly quiet if they are mounted straight, they do have a mesmerizing tune they play if they are off balance.

These are my loose 776's! I have 4 unopened boxes. Also have 7 of the 777's the large ones. And a couple of the Dreadheads. They have their down side but its all I will shoot out of Trad. equipment for hunting.

Take care, Old

Thanks for the picture Monte. Wow big size difference there. I guess some guys really like them. If that's all they use. Thanks for the input Oldbowyer. Now I know why they are so hard to find anymore.

I never heard of the Dread Head Foxbo. Were they the same weight as the Dead heads?

From: Hoyt

The Dead Head was my favorite broadhead for a while back in the 60's. Switched to Goshawks in early 70's.

Yes!!! I will be hunting with Dead Heads this season. The heads are in Beautiful shape. Thanks again Tom for letting some go. Should I use the big ones? Or should I use the small ones? I think the small ones are 130 Gr. Doe's anyone know how much the large ones weigh? thanks

From: Medicare Bhtr
Date: 06-Apr-15

Don, On my scale the small weigh approx 130 gr and the large approx 140 gr. If they are mounted straight and spin true, either size will work well for you.

From: tonto59
Date: 06-Apr-15

Thanks for the information Tom. I'm going to mount them to some cedar shafts. With Shield cut feathers.
