oldest artefact ever found in a Scandinavian snowdrift glacier has researchers abuzz. “We’ve never seen 5,000-year-old objects melt out of the ice before,” says an archaeologist from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Hmmm... the broadhead is not 3-to-1, and I doubt the complete arrow had appropriate FOC. It would never work.

Serious;y, that is cool. I remember being fascinated when this story came out. I like things that connect us to our ancient pasts. Thanks for the post.

True. And a Model T wasn't a Toyota Land Cruiser either.

If they did have better 3 to 1 heads with high FOC arrows that would've all been about 20 lbs. heavier from sitting around fat and happy watching the flintstones.

Keith, it's the spaces in the url that is the problem.

Just go to http://sciencenordic.com/ an when you're there, key 5400 arrow into the search area. Takes you to the info.

Oetzi was from about that same time but over in the Italian Alps.

Will this stop the naysayers that claim wooden arrows don't last??? No one has found an aluminum or carbon arrow that old. Bob

Thanks for the laugh, Bob. I needed it!

Wonder if I could kill some critters with slate arrowheads? Wonder if I should take one of my selfbows and a quiver full of arrows up north and jam em down into a glacier so someone might find em 5-10 thousand years from now. Wonder what it was really like to live back then... or earlier? Wonder what all is IN those glaciers? Could you imagine?

cool stuff.

Bob, that's why they know the date, because of the carbon in the arrow : )

Ice man Outzi had footed arrows didn't he?They were about the same age too.Outzi 's arrows had knapped heads as opposed to slate like those above.I would be curious as to what wood the shaft is made of.Another arrow find in the UK recently was a lot younger medival specimen found in a thatched barn roof. There is still fletching attached and a type 16 steel broad head.Richard Head from Richard Head long bows has it and is trying to get it authenticated by experts. It has a very unique knock reinforcement .Check it out on Google. 5,000 to 10,000 years from now archeologists will know our diet from all the "disposable" infant and adult diapers in the landfills.

I think I should 3D print plastic atlatls to bury in the yard.

They say since its been 5000 years since those were frozen in the glaciers that something new's happening. But it tells me that 5000 years ago the climate was right where it is now. So climate history is repeating itself.

As it has for many, MANY thousands of years.

4nolz, I wish it were going to be that sterile - just Coke bottles, but our fossil record is going to be abysmal. Whoever is around and digs up our 'artifacts' is going to think, what the H#%@ kind of filthy wasteful beasts walked the earth 10,000 years ago anyway??? Our throwaway society is shameful. Hate to be so negative, but I am not happy with society as a whole, esp. the way we package stuff so diligently to prevent theft and contamination, used once, and then chucked into the landfills. I digress, sorry - back to the thread at hand, I'm very impressed with the quality of those artifacts, and I especially like the slate heads. I think it would be so gratifying to go and find that stuff and study it.

Chesapeake it's not global warming; it's climate change. Didn't you hear? ;)
