Got this Friday from a fellow leatherwaller. Anyone know the age? I'm about to snakeskin it and do a relief carving and some stippling/basket weave. And reinforce the nocks with some antler.

Hey Dylan, I'd sure like to see it when you're finished!

I apologize in advance for being a curmudgeon...but AWWW please don't put snakeskin on that nice old bow.....

Distinguishing between 1975 and 1995 Hunter's is a challenge...if you look at the attached picture you will see why.

The top bow is a 75' sh Hunter and the bottom is a 1995 Hunter. Very similar and although the wood is different it can look the same depending on the exposure to light.

Add to that the fact they changed the stripes in the riser from 1 to 2 in the middle of production for 1995 and you have a dilemna...

You mentioned wanting to put antler tips on the bow.

Are the tips black phenolic or brown wood?

Peter am I correct that 1995 would have been the first year for them having the phenolic tips?

Brown wood. Barely there at all it seems

I think that probably makes it a 1975 version...nice bow either way

1995 was the first year for the black phenolic tips, hence my question. As camodave stated, it's a 1975. Very nice bow!

I can't see skinning that nice Hunter, either. Too classy as it is for that!

I don't like to stick my nose in but in this case I'll stand with those who are voting for no skins!

Yeah. I thought it was newer from the condition. Guess this one might remain untouched and my new martin will get the skins. Thanks for the help guys!

Noooooooo!!!!! Please don't do it. Thank you.

I also say '75.

Here's a '73 with the curved stripe in bubinga and it's similar in most ways except for the stripe.

Why do you want to ruin the looks of this gorgeous bow? Snakeskins aren't too bad, relief carvings are for selfbows but imho stippling, basket weaving, or anything similar just uglies up a bow.

I gotta agree with these guys. I hate seeing a classic like that altered. But, it's your bow man. Whatever floats your boat.

I was looking for a cheap one to play with but got this beauty instead. The snake skin still will happen. Eastern diamond backs or water mocs. But the relief carving is something I did on my bow I made and liked it and I've seen some amazing stippling but the grip on this one is pretty good at seating in the same place each time.

Here's my last one. The grain messed with the outcome a bit.
