Folks, unfortunately, this year, 2015, will be the last year I will have the "One Shot~One Kill" competition at the Howard Hill Southeastern Classic.
For several years, after I started the HH Classic, I had many, many requests to do a Howard Hill Bow only class.
I felt I did one better. I started the "One Shot~One Kill" competition for those that had Howard Hill bows as well as those that had Howard Hill style bows. Only wooden arrows could be used and I set up stakes within my regular course that was very challenging, after all, Howard Hill was an extraordinary shot with a bow.
I named it the "One Shot~One Kill" not only because of Mr Hill's nick name, "Ol One Shot, but because the competitors had only one chance to shoot the course.
The Trophy "Plaque" that everyone was shooting for was hand made every year with wood estimated to be over 100 years old. My friend, Gerald Tomasovski, hand made each one of these plaques and had approximately 33 man hours of labor in each plaque.
I've been saying every year that if participation didn't pick up, it wasn't worth my, nor Gerald's time to put this extra competition on. The first year, there were only 38 shooters, last year there were 19. Every year, the participation went down.
So, if you want to go after the last award this competition provides, you need to get a bow that qualifies, I have a jig to place these bows in and I'll post the specifications later.
As you can see in the photo, these plaques are truly outstanding and much larger than you might think.

That's sad but understandable. How about attendance in general?
I wonder why the one shot participation is so low, more because the bow or because the wood arrow? I love the romance of cedar shafts but find myself shooting aluminum and carbon for their durability alone. Thanks for the update Mr. Harris.

It's probably not the bow or the arrow, but just interest in competiton. For several years out here, it seems most folks come to events to socialize, prepare for hunting, or have a little fun. Serious competiton seems to interest fewer and fewer folks.
BTW, nice plaque.

You both may be right, but as I said, I was trying to appease the Howard Hill style bow shooters. I have found out that one has to really work on tuning the right wooden arrow to a Hill bow.
I felt the wooden arrows added, still, more of a traditional aspect to this competition. After all, the regular Men's Longbow Class could use wooden, alum. or carbon arrows.
I tried it, it didn't take :-)
The attendance over the last several years has averaged over 500 participants.

Wonderful plaque. I shot in the competition last year and I hope I can make it again this year. Being a Hill fan, I really appreciate you having the One Shot-One Kill competition.

Thanks Gordon, go for again this, the last year and good luck.
I guess I was thinking that will several Bowyers out there, Howard Hill Archery Co., Northern Mist Longbows as well as others, I felt there would be more of them at this event.
Well, at least I did give them the opportunity.

Let's not forget, bring or borrow a Howard Hill or Howard Hill style bow and go for the last "ONE SHOT~ONE KILL" unique award.

Well, like I said, I gave it a shot for those that really enjoyed competing, but competing in this competition was for those that shot the old fashion way.
