Who makes the best looking tips? Trying to come up with idea's. So far my favorites are from Big River with the v spliced phenolic on longbows and Blacktail's diagonal stripe tips. If you have something that's really nice show them off.

Dwyer does make some of the best looking tips out there. I agree.

I also have an older Fox longbow crafted by Ron Fox with antler tips that are so tiny, it's hard to believe.

Wide flat limbs don't make for sexy limb tips. The limb tips look better with narrow limbs. That's just me.

Lots of bowyers make nice tips. Some make tips that look a bit clunky. In spite of Frisky's comment, the finest tips I've ever seen are Skookum's. Fred is not only particular about the craftsmanship but he also recognizes the role tips play in performance. His tips are not only graceful and extremely well crafted, they are slim and don't add unnecessary nulk to the end of the limb.

From: Whittler

For me I like it when the tips gracefully feather on to the limbs. They look neat and it shows that the bowyer put his time in the whole bow. Nothing looks worst then a gob of wood or bone that looks like it was just thrown on like a glob of bubble gum.

I would think the limbs would preform better (less hand shock) with the feathered tips. There are some great looking tips out there.

I have to agree with Dave about the tips of a Drake...here's the one's on my Firedrake. Top view... I think decorative tips are nice but the more material and weight out beyond the string nock the more performance is negatively affected...Larry Hatfield posted info on this...anything beyond where the string seats is extra weight.

Here's Larry Hatfield's comments on tip size that I referenced above. He was answering a question why earlier Howatt's had much smaller tips than later ones and which bowyer's made them that way.

"almost every one of us! damon liked small tips. it took me a lot of years before i found out why. if you notice, the tips do not "flutter" much when you shoot the bow. dan perry showed me one day at the world flights why to eliminate almost all the material above the nocks on a self bow. i tried it on my longbows and would never go back to the standard largwer nock and tip we started using in the seventies. we did that because of peoples difficulty stringing the bows. in the sixties that was not a problem because most of the people shooting them were exprienced with recurves and longbows."

What Larry said he meant was that in the sixties people strung bows without a stringer...

He further commented:

"what dan perry showed me was pretty graphic. we were watching a guy that was shooting primitive flight for the first time. he was building board bows and had about a dozen prety well done except for tillering. the first bow he brought to the line broke on the first arrow and so did the next two. he was getting pretty frustrated. dan asked him if he could alter the next one he brought to the line and said that he would shoot it himself after he altered it. the guy said sure and handed him the bow. dan took out his knife and cut away all but a tiny nub above the nock grooves and then overdrew the bow and shot 6 arrows with no breakage. he told me that the overtravel caused by that extra material was breaking the previous bows. when i got home i ground off all but a tiny "arrow point" on my longbow and saw an immediate difference. no overtravel, no wasted energy, no reason to not do that on all my bows. and, yes, i still brace my bows the old way. never have used a stringer."

Here's a pic of the Howatt early tips...

BTW, I keep a Word document on my desktop and copy and paste Larry's comments into it, especially when bows were built, who built them, what woods were used and interesting stuff like this.

Trapper, No I don't hunt anymore, except tree rats and ground rats. If you carry the bow parallel to the ground you won't have any problem, if you carry vertical you will hang any bow.

I would put up with any problems just to have that tip, it definitely is an attention getter and just plain different, also that tip is so light it doesn't take anything away from the performance.

Oh by the way that extra groove above the string is where you loop your bow stringer over, it works great and it is the most positive way I have ever seen to string a bow, Thanks for the interest.........wing
