Alright guys and girls I finally have the cash stashed away for a new northern mist longbow. So here's my question what woods should I get? 1) I want a working bow but also something that looks very nice 2)it has to have antler tip overlays 3)43-45# @26" draw Other than this I'm open to suggestions so far they are bamboo cores clear glass,oh and it will be the baraga im short so I like a short bow also so please if you have a bow to show post some pics I would like to see the wood types and how they are together. This will probably be a one time shot at a bow made just for me so I want it to be tough as nails but have a little "Bling" so to speak at least something to make people want to look at it.So give me some suggestion I have racked my brain over all the bow sites and wood gallery's but it's hard to see them put together when there not in a bow just prices of wood thanks in advance Jeepman

I had a baraga with a pau ferro riser if memory serves, bamboo core and brown glass limbs with antler tips. steve will use cherry laminations in the limbs which I think look nice. I like a dark brown riser. dark bubinga is nice too. for some reason, I am not a fan of cocobolo.

If I was ordering ,I would go with Bamboo core with Yew lams over and clear glass

a good grainy red cocobolo riser or grainy walnut

Just what I would choose for me

also 64" 50#s @ 26" draw in a right hand bow

Elkhuntr that's a very sharp bow how did it shoot you said you had,any particular reason you got rid of it? Sorry I'm just going crazy with this I thought it would be easy just second guessing right now...Jeepman

Has anyone ever added a arrowhead or anything inlaid in the side of the riser below the grip?i talked to Steve on the phone today but he was away from the shop so I didn't want to keep him on the line so I never had a chance to ask him that.. Jeepman

jeepman, I loved the bow and it is one I wish I had back. it was a 60"er, and I draw 28". it worked great, and was steve's recommendation for someone that liked a shorter bow.

it was whisper quiet and above average speed.

I would like to get another but, other bows are calling my name right now. :)

I really like the bocote but would a spalled maple lams look good with it ? Or Birdseye maple lams,I was thinking a little darker riser with lighter colored limb laminations ? Thanks everyone so far Jeepman

check out mine in Osage manlaw I like it a lot also have a whisper. Steve builds some of the very best longbows out there.

I think bocote with spalted maple veneer would either be great looking or clash, depends a lot on the figure of the individual pieces.

For a darker riser with lighter limbs what about a kingwood riser with burl ash limbs or a figured bubinga riser with some light colored zebrawood with a rift sawn or tight grained figure.

I'm a sucker for nice Myrtle under clear glass for the limb veneer.

I have pondered this very thing. I am thinking like you are, a work bow that looks nice as well. Have seen so many bows and so many combos. I have gotten to like bamboo cores with brown glass on the back and white glass on belly. A little retro if you will. My choice for riser would be A heavy wood like Wenge or Cocobollo (sp).

Thing is wood grain/figuring can vary a good bit from one piece of wood to the next.Same goes for how it's sawn up in relation to the grain. After you have it narrowed down some if possible ask him to email some pics of those he has on hand when the time comes.

Elkhuntr's bow looks better to me than those others. I'm not a fan of gaudy, swirly grain...especially in the limbs. A classic style bow with dark glass would be my choice, and they will shoot as good as any other. I do like the bamboo limbs, but also red elm or maple.

If I were ordering another Northern Mist right now, I would get a Bolivian Rosewood riser and bamboo with American elm veneers in the limbs (and clear glass of course!).
