Hoping Mr. Hatfield will wander by and confirm the year this bow was built...just picked it up and I figure it's 1962-1964 based on other threads with Larry's comments. I'm curious of the era when Howatt used the later conquistador decal...I think they quit building the Diablo in 1964 as they were building the Hi-Speed in the same length. I also want to confirm what that gorgeous wood is! These are the pictures from the auction listing...looks rough but won't take long to fix that once I have it in hand.

The lettering is DE 68672 58" Stamped 50#

DE is Diablo Eldorado

Bowyer was #6 (Jim Hook I believe)

Peter, according to Larry, they were not making that bow anymore when he joined Howatt in '60. For more info, do a search under my handle and find 54" Howatt Diablo. I have the same bow with the same arrow holder and a Bear quiver bushing (which I think I saw in the listing for your bow). Mine has black glass, though and is a 45# lefty. A real fun bow to shoot, great grip on it. Enjoy it!

Saw that one as well Pdiddly.

My lefty is a '64 according to Larry.

Ambleman: That's a great lead...looks very much the same...I have a few Howatt's with the bow info written above the grip and they're all 56 to 60...I just find this Diablo looks like it was made later due to the dramatic design differences between the bows I have and this one but the decal and placement of the info suggests it's the age Larry states with yours. I could barely make out the quiver bushing but noticed the mark on the riser-likely what it is. Wonder if they were factory mounted accessories??

Buzz: Bow info for your bow is on the limb-mine is above the shelf which makes it older than yours. Thanks for wading in!

believe it's a 1958. the main wood is true brazilian rosewood.

Thanks Larry...that was a progressive bow for that year...was Jim Hook the bowyer? I have few others made by him. That wood is gorgeous!!

BTW, is that 3M glass on that bow?

If it's real Brazilian it's caught in a legal quagmire. Periodically I try to familiarize myself with the laws under Cites and Lacey, but I always come away with no idea what the heck they mean. If you aren't selling it, sending it through he mail interstate, or travelling abroad with it, it probably doesn't mater.

I think you are OK but I wouldn't take it out of the country.

true brazilian rosewood stopped being sold in plank form around 1960. it was then available only as veneer or other small pre-cut pieces. wood purchased before it was nationalized is fine to have in a product etc.,

I doubt customs would know what type of wood it is lol at least the agents I've dealt with.

3arrows Post a picture of the riser and the printing...is the draw weight stamped in the riser above the rest?

sorry for the double meant this one, my understanding is all 1963's 3M glass, or just certain models.

1963 and probably 3-m. we were transitioning at that time to gordon because 3-m quit supplying their glass the year before.

BTW, the bow in the original post was returned to the seller by me as it had delaminated and been poorly repaired...too bad as I could have spiffed it up otherwise.

Great looking bow Bob.
