Today I look at Bob's website and dream could I afford a new bow. There is no doubt in my mind. If I had the funds available I could still own one of the finest bows ever made.

Suffice to say I happen to own a couple RWH's from the early years. MR,(Capital Letters) Lee has for some reason done us all a favor for the last 60 and maybe 70 years. He held his business together and passed it on to His Family.

Mr. Lee, from the bottom of my heart, Thank you very much.

Mr. Rich Lopez has an excellent interview with Mr. Bob Lee on his website that I think you all ought to ponder.

Two thumbs up for another old timer that happens to be one of the best reasons we're here.

A new Bob Lee bow is on my bucket lust. Doubt I'll ever own one, though.

I've owned three red wing hunters over the years and one gull wing, they were all great bows, I sold two of the hunters and gave the gull and a hunter away to a couple guys starting out, if they would have been more the weight I was shooting I'd still have all of them. They are some fine shooting bows.

Beautiful Swift Wing, Jim.

Two PII's, one long and one short handle (Phenolic/Rosewood), T-Bird 62", Chapparel and Competition II slide loc take down.

Really love the old Wings and feel they shoot great --at least for me.

I have a White Wing that I found at a antique store a few years ago. Pd. about $45.00 for it if I remember correctly. It's 66" and 50#. Ser. #W715. Anyone have an idea when it was made?

Here's a few pictures of a beauty that just arrived yesterday. 62" 70# Swift Wing from the mid 60's. Excellent condition...all it was was dirty.

As soon as I saw the listing and draw weight I immediately thought of direwolf (he really likes bows that fight back!! LOL.)

I also thought of him as I knew he had an older Swift Wing.

This is a bow that's been on my bucket list for a while.

That's a great one you have there Pdiddly. I like just about all of the Wing bows and would love to find a nice pre AMF RW Hunter for a decent price.

From: robert

hey Pdiddly if I would of had one in that weight, it would never have gotten away, real nice bow there.

That Wing is from the early 60's.

Pdiddly, that's beaut for sure. It would shorten my draw length from 29" down to about 19.

Here's my Red Wing Hunter. I have an couple Head era as well. Great bows.

I've been blessed with 30+ different models over the years. This one I acquired from bd which he shot for some time after refinishing it.

He told me when he sent it to me that his wife was looking out the window as he was shooting it for the last time, "that bow is fast". Since then Don and his wife have been on my favorite list.

I actually traded it maybe 5 years back and saw it posted for sale and brought it back again.

Hopefully this is one of the bows that the kids will fling an arrow into the sky with when my time comes.

I've owned a bunch of Wing bows during the past 45 years. They were my "go to" bow for many years. Back in 1974 I bought a new Vantage Pro that I thought was the best thing going. In a weak moment I sold it to a friend. I've been looking for a nice one for a long time and hit pay dirt today.

I was lucky enough to buy this Vantage Pro from Kelly Peterson (Kelly on here) at the Wisconsin Traditional Association weekend in Madison, Wi.

What a beautiful bow! Thanks Kelly!

From: Kelly
Date: 23-Feb-15

Yup, can't shoot them all so am glad that Vantage Pro went to someone who appreciates great shooting bows. Can't remember how many Wings I've owned, shot and hunted with over these past 50+ years but it is time to let some of my collection of Bear's, Wing, Damon Howatt, etc go. Just can't shoot them all. Enjoy Bernie!

I was lucky enough to buy this '61 Presentation for a very reasonable price. Other than the sticker was long gone, it's just about perfect.

Sorry I'm late for class - the bus broke down again! Anyway, here's a little photo-essay comparing 3 older Presentations (none of this I or II stuff). They are in chron order, oldest at the top (Outlaw in the middle - the middle child is always the troublemaker).

From: davidross
Date: 12-May-15

davidross's embedded Photo

The oldest one, P-0250 (thanks again, KH!) is marked 66" and 45#. The Outlaw, P-764 and 69" 33#. The youngest, P-5085 (with riser horns), is 69" and 36#.

From: davidross
Date: 12-May-15

davidross's embedded Photo

Interesting change in limb design over the span of just a few years (1961 - 1964?). Unfurling the limbs on the youngest bow makes it taller, even with the same tip-to-tip measurement.

From: davidross
Date: 12-May-15

davidross's embedded Photo

Speaking of tips - they are all tiny. The Outlaw has the most elaborate tip lams of the three. I use a Bateman stringer for most of my bows, and a Selway (with rubber block) for these and my Groves bows.

And the last photo for now. I'm always interested in learning more about the bows in my collection, and I hope some of you LWers have some knowledge (and catalog pages!) to share (I bid on an auction recently for some old catalogs - I really wanted the Wing catalog and I another bidder wanted the Bear catalog - the set went for more than many of my bows and I lost out).

From: Kelly
Date: 12-May-15

The very first of the Presentations did not have the belly overlays below the grip like on yours. Also note there is no decal on those early ones.

From: davidross
Date: 12-May-15

Kelly, I read a rumor that you own P-001. Can you confirm? Do you know if the serial numbers were consecutive, and if it's possible to establish dates with them?

From: Kelly
Date: 12-May-15

Used to own that bow.

Yes they were consecutive to a point till they changed the model shape. Mostly able to make guess on year.

I have a pre-Head era RW Hunter with serial number that starts with R7. Does that signify a transitional model?

The tips are not tiny and delicate, but rather squared off with three layer laminations. They appear to be sufficiently durable to withstand a modern low- stretch string. I'm very tempted to order one and see what kind of performance improvements might result, not that it really needs it.

From: Kelly
Date: 13-May-15

Please do not use any ofvthe non stretch string materials on any old bows.

A RWH with a serial R7 would be extremely rare, I've never seen with that numbering. Could we see a picture of the Wing decal and the serial number?

Here's an early RWH in 62" lefty..rare bird

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Backcountry, yes....a Rhino 10 strand with padded loops. Here's the deal with that. With a dacron string, it shoots 2016 with 145 grain tips..28" arrows..bow is 46# at my 27" draw. With the Rhino string, it shoots 28" 2018, and 29" 2117 best. The Rhino string is definitely quieter and has zero vibration on the shot.

I did work the notches to make sure there weren't any edges, and also sanded the ends of the fiberglass where it contacts the notch area.

I have a Bob Lee Signature from 1993 and a Classic from 2000. One thing I have noticed is that the grip on both of my bows looks remarkably similar to the grips on the older bows shown on this and other threads. Anyone else notice that?

From: Backcountry
Date: 14-May-15

Thanks, George.

I talked to Mr. Lee a couple years about doing a weight reduction and re-inforcing the tips of a Comp II (Wing AMF era) with phenolic overlays. He said, "You put a fast flight string on that and you'll think you died and went to heaven!"

Yup.

Now those are what you call tiny tips!I sent these pictures to JJ at Bob Lee Bows and he got quite revved up; said it probably went back to when Bob was building them in his garage.
