This is a picture of the start of this project. The bow is one that came out of this form serial # 54-A-5. The book is my Dads record book. Not sure how far back it goes but it has a Miller Lite coaster in it that says 218 "recorded" bows. The riser is the last 54" bow he started

And the book was opened. 54-A-5 in the upper right hand corner. He built 10 of these 54" bows and they are on the last three pages of this book. Two with white Howatt glass and 8 with cinnamon. I'm using cinnamon for this bow.

This is the last 54-A riser that my Dad started. As you can see it's pretty buggered up. The other end is worse. The holes in the riser were for lead. Not a lot of riser to these 54" bows. Pretty much all limb. Dad used the lead to give the bows more mass weight than he could get with wood

REAL COOL!!! and I like the looks of that bow REB

A full shot of the 54-A-5 in the form that it was built in. I've never used one of my Dads forms. And after studying this some have come to the conclusion I need to build 3 bows instead of the initial two that I was planning. A fellow can dry run all he wants but until the "bow snot" goes you don't know how its going to react. I can fix Dads riser easy enough. But want to have at least a clue before it goes into the form. It's Evil Twin will have over a couple bills in carbon and foam. Need to know what I'm doing before I commit either of these two bows to the form.

Won't bother Y'all with posting the first one, they don't always go so good! LOL

I'm shooting for 45#@28" on all of these bows. My main interest other than finishing Dads riser is to see what modern materials will do to a bow designed in 1967!

Material is ordered for the "Twin" but it will be a while before it gets here. Gives me time to fix the riser and build the other bow. I'll post the riser fix

Y'all take care

X2 I'll be watching too. Cool looking bow. Jeff F

From: Oldbowyer
Date: 10-Feb-15

Thank you Jeff. My Dad had a rig in the back yard for flight shooting and checking the cast of his designs. He also had a rack of special arrows for the purpose. Shortly before his stroke he had 4 of his 54" bows laying face down on the kitchen table. Whish I had a picture of that. But you could see the decades of his work to this last design of his 54" bows. This is the only one I have. I had one of the very early ones but done something stupid and blew it up. Hard lesson learned that day, very hard!

Y'all take care

Gluing 1 of the risers for this project in the morning. Will be spending the rest of the day working on Dads riser and will take pictures of it as I go. Will post them when she is ready for the form.

Its been slow going but the weather has finally broke some and I have a new tool in the shop I can't wait to play with. Should help a lot fixing Dads riser also. Was notified Fri. that the material for its "Evil Twin" is on its way. So will start that riser this week also.

Thanks, and Y'all Take care Old

The Evil Twin. The final bow that will go into the form. Carbon and foam! Had a dickens of time tracking down this carbon. Butt measurement will be the same as the other two bows.

I'm really hoping that this bow and Dads come out the same poundage. Will set Dads bow up just like he did with dacron. The Twin will have FF or what ever the fastest string is these days. Be interesting to see if all the money was worth it on the Twin.

I'll start a new thread when all these bows are finished. Give some stats for you number crunchers and see if my old chrony still works.

Hope Y'all enjoyed this restoration of my dads last riser

Y'all take care, Old

Decided to finish this thread here instead of starting a new one. And I'm sorry it has taken so long to show the finished product. But as stated yesterday have not had all the bows together for awhile. This will take a while so please don't post till I close out. Have several things I want to share

This first shot I posted yesterday. Dads original bow, Bubinga white Howatt glass. 32#@28", @nd bow coco and shedua riser and cores under clear glass, 40#@28". Dads riser, Bubinga Howatt cinnamon glass. 38#@28". The Evil Twin, Waterfall Bubinga, carbon weave, foam cores. 42@28".

I'm a little disappointed in the speed of the Twin. Really thought I could break 200fps with 42#. Top speed at 28" with 350gr. arrow has been 189fps, at 29" (44#) 195fps. I'll get some 10gr per inch testing soon. But what the carbon did do was to give the bow fantastic torsional stability. You about to have to stand on the tips to twist them. Do plan on playing with this material in the future

My Dad (1926-2007) and the deer he shot when I was 11 years old. I've read the threads on here about light bows. The bow he is holding (which went missing under the care of my brother) was 33#@28". Due to a bad a fall when my dad was a young man ( he was not expected to live) he only drew 26" the bow would have been 27#!

Dead Heads rule! What is left of the micro-flite shaft that was taken out of the deer. I have the other half in the shop

And the book was closed. My Dads finshed riser on the left original on the right. Although it was the 2nd bow out of the form it is recorder in his book as 54-A-11 38#@28".

Taken Wind Feather to her new owner tomorrow. After much personal debate I'm giving Dads riser to my nephew. He was involved in a bad car accident at 17 and is paralyzed from the waist down and does not have much use of his arms either. But He and dad were very close and I feel this is what dad would have done with the bow if he had finished it. He'll never be able to shoot the bow but he does not have any of his Grandpa's stuff

I'm keeping the Twin it will go on the wall with the other 2 bows I have that Dad built when I get done testing it. Who knows my even take it hunting someday.

Y'all take care, The Oldbowyer

I think the real advantage to carbon is in longbows.Have you had any success finding any of the bows he made for people?

From: Oldbowyer
Date: 15-Jul-15

Yes 4nolz there are many of them around here that I know who has them. There was also one sold here on LW! awhile back. That bow turned out to have gone to someone else I knew who has several of my bows. That bow was also a 54 and had belonged to one of my dads hunting buddies, who was an avid turkey hunter. It resides now also in the hands of an avid turkey hunter!
