David Ellenbogen (who used to run Rivendell Archery) made these arrows; I saw them in the online auction and thought they were just elegant. His shafts are old-growth Port Orford cedar cut at over 6,500' elevation many years ago, and these are all spined at 72# and weigh within five grains of each other. The best thing was, for the cost of the arrows I also got a quick education, and an answer to any question about arrows that I could throw at him.
That bright cock feather really lets you see the rotation on the arrow. I'm eagerly awaiting another dozen from him that are spined at 51# and are 5/16" diameter; they should be just the ticket for my target weight bows.

Here's some I'm working on to shoot at the Moses Lake Rock shoot this year.
These have the Scots Robertson 'red tartan' with the family crest. The crest emblem on the sword blade reads Glory Honor Virtue.
Fletching will be red bar feathers with spliced white tracers. Shafts are GT Trad 3355 with the logo washed off with acetone. These will be fun to bounce off the rocks...

I have a serious question from you guys. Is there anyway to do a competent job of cresting barrel tapered arrows? As you can see, the lines up near the nock are not straight due to being nock tapered 5/16 from 11/32. I tried everything. Holding the brush at an angle, straight, almost parallel with the shaft. But, they still went on crooked. I got so irritated I didn't even do the last one. Any advice? God Bless

WV Mountaineer my question is how fine is the brush you use? I use the finest brush I can get my hands on for pinstripes. I will often apply the pinstripes first and then fill in the color second when I'm dealing with a wobble in a shaft. Just from looking it appears you use a thicker brush then I do?
BTW Nice work so far everyone keep them coming I'm always liiking for ideas.

Its one of Bob's from Whispering Wind, It is pretty dang fine. Problem I think I was having was the shaft wasn't wobbling nearly as much as the surface being painted wasn't flat. No way to take that out of it. Thanks for the reply. God Bless

11/31 (.349) to 5/16 tapered shaft (.319) Yes, it is slightly oversize on both ends.
Fine lines at the nock end. I know it's not a complete arrow but my curiosity got piqued.

Stoner, I don't know what David calls that cut, but he basically tested every different fletching jig, and various positions of the fletching fore and aft, with a few thousand shots from a heavy shooting stand that he made (mechanical release, the whole nine yards)and settled on this combination... I think he said it was 20º helical fletching, set an inch and a quarter ahead of the nock, with feathers burned to this profile. I'll PM you his contact info if you want to ask him more about it.

On David's arrows that distance is 6.25" because he uses 4-3/4" feathers. He puts those little pinstripes at the front and back of each feather to remind us that once upon a time strips of sinew were used to help hold the fletches on.

Hey tubby just seen your question on the footing process. I can't say for sure as I kind of pick away at them. You can add a couple hours for setting everything up and to router the shafts to accept the footings ( I usually use a couple broken arrows to fine tune everything before using the "good" shafts ). I buy my footing from 3R so that isn't labor intensive. It probably takes me between an hour and a half to two hours to glue the footing onto the shafts. Then maybe an hour plus to two per shaft to hand plane and sand to size. I like the challenge of it but it is a lot of work when sometimes all ya really want to do is fling some arrows lol

George don't get discouraged about what you think might be a lack in artistic talent. I tend to make what I have seen before and when I'm in a slump I ask my better half for suggestions. I've learned the hard way that if asked and she responds and I don't follow through correctly the next several weeks can be very stressful ;) so I pay attention. LMAO
George I wish I could build bows as well as you. I started with bows and soon discovered that that stave I could only get one bow out of ( if I was lucky) I could get a couple dozen arrows out of. :D

The pink/purple arrows were my first effort. As you can see, I had a few cresting issues. I learned that GOOD brushes are crucial to a nice finished product. The green/purple arrows are a much better effort on my part.

Okay, I believe these will be my last arrows this year. It's time to get them hunt ready..........rather, me hunt ready! My daughter picked the colors and feather cut. I will begin with Colorado elk late August, using these arrows, and bow shown! Good luck to everyone this fall. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

Some awesome looking arrows on this thread guys. It has inspired me to buy a cresting jig and try this wonderful artform. I have a traditional shoot coming up (woods only) so I thought I would try to get a bit fancy with this lot. The arrows are spined at 60-65 pound and are port orford cedar. I too love the smell of broken cedar shafts:) I'll have to try splicing feathers on of these days. Keep up the awesome work guys, I'm really enjoying this thread.

UnderTheRadar, I just take acrylic paint that is very slightly watered down, get some on a brush almost as wide as my fingernail, and use my index finger to "flick" the paint toward my shaft... Make sure to have a proper area for doing this if you decide to try it, my childrens school registration paper got turned in with black paint dots all over them haha. Whoops!
