I realize that private land is off limits maybe Nat forest?

From: fdp

It actually varies depending on the type of land you are on. Some types of public land don't allow it, some do.

Maybe see IF you can connect up with folks-archers who live in the states you'll visit.. Roving can be done almost anywhere..so long as it's not restricted by laws and private property..

Just need your bow and arrows..some good boots..a small lunch..maybe a companion?.. You get all the way to OREGON..I'll take you afield..:) Jim

It's common for folks here in Washington to rove Nat'l forests as well as state land, and I've never heard of problems. I've heard some states require hunting license while others say it's not allowed during hunting season.

Try contacting officials in the states you're visiting or maybe folks on here will chime in with their state's regs.

...and if you get to WA, I'll be available too.

thnx guys much appreciated not sure if we'll make it that far Wa is gorgeous from pics I've seen we have about 12 days to go from Ga out west and back can't think of a better way to spend some time than launching some arrows just don't want to end up in the pokie lol

You're good to go on public/Nat'l forest land in Montana. I haven't had any problems roving and stumping. No go if in National parks though or state parks.

From: tjulian

I believe you need to have at least a small game hunting license here in Mo.

thnx guys might drive across MT. after we leave SD win win for sure

No "stumping" on public land in Illinois...coyote season is year round, get a hunting license and take a walk.

That's good to know SportHunter. Have taken my boy stumpping a couple of times without thinking about it. Always have my hunting permit on me though.

There is a tremendous amount of National Forest and Bureau of Land Management land in the west. I don't think you would have a bit of trouble if you stay clear of private land and city limits.

But the Great Basin is hard country, so take tough shafts. And they don't call them the Rocky Mountains for nothing. But there are millions of acres where you can wander as you please and shoot off about anything so long as you are not hunting. - lbg

I'd check with the wildlife dept's of each state and keep their response in you pocket.

Remember, to a game warden you are a small game hunter without a license. Unless you make the mistake of taking a arrow with a broadhead... then you are a big game hunter w/o a license.

good info what I was looking for thnx Dog makes sense its the same here

From: oldgoat

It can actually vary from National Forest to National Forest and sometimes even District to District within the same National Forest. There is no recreational shooting allowed in one of the local to Denver National Forest Districts. Others it's no problem but I read in another thread that you have to be fifty yards off the road. The litterbug target shooters and irresponsible unsafe shooters ruin it for all!

I think tjulian is right about the small game tag for MO.

I checked for Tennessee and it was advised to check with the WMA manager before doing so. the person I asked felt like unless a hunting season was going open it might not be a good idea.

Thnx guys just might have to check in with law before launching some carbon just curious is there a state that has some jackrabbits to shoot maybe I can buy a 3 day licence there Wyoming maybe?

From: Toby
Date: 28-Jan-15

Anyone know if you can have your archery gear in your vehicle/camper in National Parks if you don't use it?

From: greg simon
Date: 28-Jan-15

I know Wyoming has jackrabbits, and you can spotlight and shoot them at night on private land!

Eastern Oregon Jack Rabbits are hit and miss. Roving is OK on public lands: Forest Service and BLM.

thnx Mike time constraints will most likely keep me out of Oregon wish I had more time I really like the pictures iv'e seen of the eastern part of the state high desert?

Brian that would be great thnx for the offer we'll see where we are when we roll thru think it will be central Ks

From: SquareHead

Great topic as I always take a bow with me on road trips for stumping. I just try to use common sense and don't shoot around people or on private land. Have to be careful in city limits. I have even shot at old cardboard boxes I have found in the dumpsters at hotels!

Another suggestion is to take a rolling target, or portable target along with you. Maybe a tennis ball, soccer ball, or one of the commercially available targets that you throw on the ground and then shoot at. This should support your image of just a rover and not actually hunting.

Safe travels!

Great idea Chris I like old basketballs they are good for several hundred shots even after the initial shot thnx guys

Man does this thread peak my interest! My wife and I love to stump shoot and travel but I am really worried about how we can do it when out of our home state. How awesome would it be if you could legally just pull over in most National Forests and shoot without the stress and concerns?

It would be great if we could get an organized list of licence requirements for each state. Is this something you guys would want to do and help compile? It would need to be specific, easy to understand and then the information probably put into a spreadsheet.

I know it may not be cost effective to buy an out of state small game licence but at least we would know if we wanted to.

Ralph, I live in Wichita and would be happy to take you out. I belong to a 3D club about 20 minutes away, if interested there is a 48 target shoot June 21st. If not your cup of tea, I could find us a place to go stumping instead.

Brian that's awesome I will make it a point to try gonna be a foursome maybe just what we need to break up the trip but only two shooters thnx again
