We kind of get to thinking sometimes that Cocobolo is a reddish wood with relatively large pores...not alway though as this piece is very dark and dense with no visible pores

This piece is redder with much more open pores...presumably not as dense

Is this a show your cocabola thread? Cause if it is here's one I got from dp

Yep, it can vary quite a bit from piece to piece.

Anything from light orange to dark violet. It's beautiful stuff!

However, as beautiful as it is, I decided to discontinue using it recently because I'm slightly allergic to it, plus it was upgraded to the CITIES II list.

Since it was upgraded on the list, it makes it more difficult to find nice pieces, and it also drove the price up.

We're not even supposed to ship out of the U.S. under the CITIES regulations.

Hard to get the right angle to show the beauty of this bow

From: camodave
Date: 24-Jan-15

One thing that just hit me...I am pretty sure nobody ever built an ugly bow with Cocobolo...Brandon you really make me wish I had bought one of your Special Edition bows a long time ago...that lefty is about as good as it gets...thanks for posting people and yes the idea was to show what ya got...in my case nothing since in my ultimate wisdom I no longer own either of those bows...and I have a feeling that by starting this thread I may have driven up the price of used ones...be careful what you wish for

Nice bow Mike, but your quiver's on upside down. :^)

From: MikeW
Date: 24-Jan-15

Yeah I know... ;) Long story and the bow is long gone also.

My friend put it on while I was doing some other stuff and I didn't catch it until after I took the pics. Don't have many pics of it.

Had to sell it while I was raising 6 kids to keep the lights on once. Meet a guy at a local 3D shoot who agreed to pay $800 for it($1200 bow that was 6 months old) he shot it for the day at the shoot and during that shoot a good buddy heard what I was doing and offered the money I needed so I didn't have to sell the bow...tracked the guy down and he already sold it for $500 to someone else at the shoot..Who does that? Takes a $300 loss in a matter of hrs.

I've seen it posted here once since then.

Cocobolo is my favorite.

A rich piece of coco looks so great paired with the black ebony which is also getting hard to find.

Wes Wallace makes a beautiful recurve pairing coco with bacote.

Best wishes.

From: camodave

Well it turns out I am way more astute than I give myself credit for...apparently the Wolfer I am in the process of paying for has some nice Cocobolo in the riser which is likely one of the things that attracted me to it in the first place...all is right in my world...well other than a strange itch in my typing fingers urging me to order a Rose Oak and a Blacktail and a Silvertip...sometimes the best way to cure an addiction is lack of funds eh

It took forever on slow Internet for all pics to show. Wow, thanks for showing all of the beautiful bows.

Not sure if anyone is into it, but some acoustic guitars are being made with back and sides of cocobolo. They are incredible.

From: RymanCat
Date: 25-Jan-15

Rose Oaks are the top of the class in customs. I feel this because I have a few as well as Black Tails and Schafers and most of the rest.

When I look at the woods and the gloss that brings the beautys to life and I look at all my others. I have to say the oaks are the prettiest and do they ever shoot.

I see a few here with the orange and looks like to me in some of the Oaks to. Is this color in Coco hard to get? The strike and Smith hammer has some beautiful Orange Coco. I like that color more than the red maybe in my bows that have it rather than my red coco bows.

How about the waterfall Coco anyone have that?

From: camodave

Actually most of my bows are right handed...just turned out that those two cocobolo ones are lefties...the Wolfer is right handed...I have shot both right and left handed for a long time starting with guns when I was a teen, graduating to compound bows in the nineties and now recurves and longbows...like any activity if you do it long enough with some thought it just becomes something you do...I have taught people to shoot a recurve both right and left handed in a week...not with great accuracy maybe but with decent form...you might not be surprised to know that my best students have been women and children

Without a doubt, my favorite riser wood for both longbows and recurves, and absolutely love the contrast when paired with an Osage accent stripe.

Oh ya!

Cocobolo and Osage look awesome together.

One of my favorite combo's, especially after the bow is about a year old and the Osage mellows out a little.

I have a bow by the late Shawn Peterson that's Cocobolo and Osage.

It's a unique and beautiful little bow.

I think our pal Skookum may have been the first bowyer in this country to use cocobola in a riser; he told me about making one as early as 1960 as I recall. Here's his own hunting recurve from 2007, a 46# "Mojo" made with coco and yew. Bows come and bows go... but I'll be hanging on to this one I believe.

I know everyone is probably tired of seeing such great cocobolo influenced bows but I just told someone else about this thread and need to run it to the top again...that Vintage Works bow reminds me of the Brazilian Rosewood in my 1960 Kodiaks and also reminds me that cocobolo is a "true" rosewood
