Hello to all! I think during many time about buying a 400- 500$ bow and a couple cheap arrows to start but I think I would buy "all" the equipment to start and get a cheaper recurve bow such as a Samick Sage or a Martin Jaguar or something in that price range...any one has experience with these bows? Whick one do u recomend? Any picture of your set up with these bows? Thanks allot Cheers!

Hello, i actually have a martin jaguar and a omp mountaineer (just a fancier samick sage) i like both, if you want to stay more traditional and shoot off the shelf then go for the samick, if you plan to use an elevated rest then go for the martin(i suggest a nap centerrest) they are both good entry level bows. If you go with the martin buy new, they have the limb problem fixed now and if you get an older one martin will not warranty a used bow. If i were to choose just one it probaly would be ....? If money is an issue then go for the samick..... rich pyle

I just got a Martin saber all Black 64" long 55lbs. And I can tell you this bow is smooth and quick but I did put a fast flight string on and a different rest because they were junk other than that I would put this up against my high end bows anyday. I love shooting it I got it from Walmart web sight for only 210.00 N. free shipping.

Hello instinctivebow, i too put a fastflight string and a new rest on my jaguar and its a totally different bow. The limb problem has been fixed as long as you get a new one. Only negitive is my 45# limbs are actually 45# at 26" not 28" but thats a good thing for me since i only draw 25". And i like the 60" length better than the 62" length that samick offers. Rich pyle

I haven't shot the Jaguar, but I did own the Saber. I also own two Sages and a Samick Journey. I liked the Saber OK, but love my Samicks. I can spray paint them, I can take a file to them and customize my risers, and never worry about breaking them. Great shooting bows and inexpensive. With fast flight string they will smoke the Saber and I would guess probably the Jaguar.

I have shot both. both are ok, but the sage will resale or trade easier. the jag. has a shelf about 2 inches wide. also metal vs wood. easier to set up the rest on a sage. sage is cheaper. ....ron

two totally different bows, very modern vs more traditional, for someone coming from a compound background the jaguar is similar, and btw i too have both,{jaguar and omp mountaineer} and with fast flight strings on both, and the omp mountaineer does not smoke the jaguar, both are about equal giving the same draw weight and arrows rich pyle

Try as I might I cannot understand why anyone would want to own a bow with as much reflex in the riser as the Martin Jaguar...those are compound risers, made for high arrow velocity and low brace heights, on recurve bows...more power to you if you can shoot one of those well...in general the more deflex I have in a riser the better I like it (unless of course the bow is a compound)

Jaguar is probably the hardest bow to shoot accurately that I have ever shot. If I had one I'd throw the riser in the trash and put the limbs on a different riser.

The Jaguar has a heavy reflex riser(hint VERY hard to shoot)Its a compound riser they bolted on recurve limbs. Had 1 for for 2 days and gave it away to a guy I didnt like! Sage,Sage,Sage.

If you ever get a chance at one I had a Martin Lynx recurve that I wish I had never sold...that bow was built on the Lynx compound riser back in the days then compound risers had quite a bit of deflex built into them...excellent limbs with a ball bearing locating system

Thanks allot! I´m kind of a beginner and if the jaguar is more difficult to shoot accurate I will probably get the sage! it is also cheaper... I also like more the look of wood risers! And comparing to other low cost samick bows such as the red stag,Phantom or Deer master? The sage still the "best"? Thanks!

Don't go for the sage! Get the new jaguar elite! It's the bee's knee's and trader jan will give the best price. Found her site on Facebook and am so glad I called. They totally remodeled the jaguar in the elite model. Go look at it

I actually shot a jaguar that was set up just like a compound. Rest, sights, string loop and release..Wasn't mine, but after shooting it for a while i handed it back and said "holy crap"...i got real good, real quick with it. And using a release i'm certain boosted the speed a bit.
I think i actually posted a question or two about the jag some time back, got the itch to go technical for a bit....was short lived, and i never followed through with it.
Wouldn't be for me, might as well shoot a compound.

Hmmm...so the Jaguar Elite is remodelled eh...seems like a pretty wildly reflexed riser bow to me...smoke and mirrors are a pretty common marketing strategy these days...and if I was buyin a Samick bow I would spend the extra money on a Devastator...many people new to this game think the bow is the most costly part of the equation...I have bows that I only paid a bit over a hundred dollars for but I shoot 150 dollar a dozen arrows with them

Camodave.....ah your on to something... I've wondered about that myself. We often talk about bows. But truth is you can kill an awful lot of game with a pretty cheap bow.....But i want good arrows at all cost.

GT Trad arrows are not really inexpensive either...if you are willing to pay what they cost you should probably take a look at something a little more expensive in the Samick lineup...to do that get a Lancaster Archery Supply print catalog so you can do a complete comparison of a lot of models...better yet find a shop with a supply of a number of models and try them all...you might also wish to take a look at the peteward.com website for reports on some of the Bodnik bows...they are very popular in this end of the world

hello, in defense of the martin jaguar. Mine is not a piece of junk, for someone to say across the board that a certain product is a piece of junk is a slap in the face for the many that own a good one. i shoot mine as good [or bad] as any of my bows. i have not found it to be any more difficult, while its not my go to bow it certainly shoots great and has not given me any problems, a fast flight string and a quality rest is all i added. rich pyle

Yeah I bought the new Jag elite with 2 custom strings with silencers installed for 230 bucks. It's a heck of a deal and was re made to be more competitive towards the other ILF bows out there. Which yes, the new Jaguar Elite is ILF compatible. Only a few shops are selling them(I used that shop in Massachusetts mentioned earlier) and after calling Martin I've found that the risers are built here in the USA but the limbs are made by Ragim in Italy now. But you can throw any ILF limb you want on it in the future so that's a huge win in my book. Also it has an 18" riser I was told, so if you get one, take not of that. I had to get a 57" string for my tradtech limbs I bought.

Of the two bows mentioned, I vote for the Samick. I have a Samick Journey, which is the same riser as the Sage. The Journey has longer limbs making a 64" bow, vs the Sage @ 62". Very smooth, and pretty quiet.

The sage has bushings for rests, sights and stabilizers and can be set up for any combination of modern or trad. More accurate with a rest, more trad off the shelf- whatever you like.
