A lot of interest has been shown by members that have never made or even shot a selfbow so I decided to pass one around this year for anyone that is interested.

Throw your name in the hat by posting here stating which month you prefer to receive it.

I'll send it in a tube to the first recipient and they will then forward it on to the next. All I ask is that you ship it on time using the same tube and packing material.

I'll ship on the 15th and expect everyone else to do likewise.

You are also asked to keep everyone informed as to when you receive, when and who you sent to and as we all know the longer it's in transit the more likely it is to be damaged so for that reason don't sign up unless you are willing to pay shipping by priority mail and furnish a tracking #.

I'll post pics and specs tomorrow but it's high 40's#@29 and should handle a 30" draw. No need for insurance, priority mail will cover $50 and no sense spending the extra funds.

I'd appreciate it if everyone signed the belly of the bow and we'll have a drawing next January from the participants if it makes it around and the winner will get the bow. And if it should happen to break or explode don't sweat it just make sure you let us know. If it were my pride and joy I wouldn't be passing it around.

Happy New Year!!!!>>>----> Fred

Fred sure I'm interested! Put my name in please and thank you. I would like to get it in Oct. Can't wait to shoot it.

Date: 13-Jan-15

Marc, I know you don't need it and thank you very much for not making me ship it to Canada. I actually have tears in my eyes from laughing. Should you ever decide to open your heart and pass one of yours around, would you do me the favor of giving me advance notice and I will pay the shipping.

From: RonsPlc
Date: 13-Jan-15

Fred, I've been following your thread, and would be honoured to try your bow out if I may.

It doesn't matter which month.

Don you are marked down for October and may the spirits be with you on that Osage stave you have coming. I have a strange feeking that by October you will have already decided on your hunting bow for the year.

From: Fred Arnold
Date: 13-Jan-15

Craig, you got it. I'll be sending it out Thursday morning. Hopefully you'll get addicted. Send me your address. I'm going to include an arrow which you can keep or pass on. Should you decide to keep it all I ask is that you pull out another that you made or have to send to the next recipient and please sign it. It's all about passing it on.>>>---->Fred

Fred that really cool, I love this type thread. It is always fun to look at the pictures of people shooting the bow and even better if someone gets lucky in hunting season.

I am lucky enough to know Arvin Weaver here in Texas and even luckier to have two of his selfbows. Well one of them he may not claim, I made it under his very patient and watchful eye.

Let's keep this thread up top.

glenbow, Jawge, Caughtandhobble, Mike, thank you all and although Jawge won't admit to being hundreds of years old, I believe he's a throwback from Greek mythology and his spirit has been with us for thousands of years. We are all very fortunate to have his wisdom and grace at our disposal.

Here are a few pics. Specs are 58" NTN, 47#@29. Bow looks to be cockeyed looking at it unbraced but strings up and shoots good. The top limb has some twist, doesn't seem to effect performance. String lays to the left from the top limb viewing from the belly side when strung but tracks the center of the handle. Set up for right hand shooter, would work as well for a lefty shooting off the knuckle. e if the slideshow works. http://s190.photobucket.com/user/Bowferd/slideshow/2015%20Osage%20 bendy%20handle%20pass%20around

From: Fred Arnold
Date: 14-Jan-15

David, I got your message. dhermon scheduled for August.

September, November, and December remain open.

Hey Bob, good to hear from you. Last night when I was moving things around I bumped a nice bamboo backed and bellied longbow off the wall and it landed on it's tip and broke. Ouch!!! Bet you can't guess which one it was. I cringed and froze when it went. Looks like I have some light repair work to schedule. It's fixable, still gnaws on me though for being careless.

From: BowAholic
Date: 15-Jan-15

I hate it when I do stuff like that, but it happens... at least you have the ability to repair it. :) I like the design of your little bow.

From: Fred Arnold
Date: 15-Jan-15

Bow was shipped to the first recipient just before lunch. Craig I was told it would be there Saturday but you never know. I'll PM you the tracking #. Just to give you all an idea of what to expect come shipping time the cost for USPS priority from Nebraska to Pennsylvania was $17.80. Fred

I rec'd a PM from monkeyball and he informed me that the end cap on the tube was loose. When he picked the tube up the end cap fell out along with the tip packing material. There was a second protective foam covering both tips that was wrapped securely with rubber bands which looked to have been tampered with.

A portion of the duct tape holding the end cap was also missing. After inspection Craig said the tip was split and we are now in the process of making a claim with the post office.

If it looks like it can not be repaired I will try to get a backup bow sent out to replace this on asap.

Sorry for the short delay and we may change dates from the 15th to a later time of the month, Fred

From: tonto59

From: Fred Arnold

It will be coming back to me for repair. I will then forward it to RonsPlc/ February recipient and Craig/ monkeyball will be receiving it next January. It will just extend the drawing for 1 month.

Good news!! the bow tip was repaired and sent on to Ronsplc who received it Friday. Ron will hopefully post some info and pics and pass it on to readheadlvr mid March. Make sure you two get together to exchange mailing and communication info.

Luck to all. Fred

Great Fred, Glad to hear all went well. And you were able to make a repair. I have had good luck sending bows. But I guess it happens sometimes. Looking forward to trying out your selfbow thanks. Don

From: Traxx

Great to hear.

From: Fred Arnold
Date: 15-Feb-15

Cross your fingers!!!

Ron called and said when he drew it to about 20" it made a tearing sound. He unstrung it and called me. He said he couldn't detect any visible damage but didn't want to progress any further until he talked to me.

He's going to string it again and put it on the tree and work it slowly until reaching full draw. We'll see if it holds. Hopefully it was salvaged but won't know for sure.

The original crack that I repaired after getting it back ran between spring growth/late growth rings on the tip. I injected Loctite 420 with a syringe allowing it to flow down into the cracked area and clamped overnight.

I sanded, sealed and inspected in the morning. Later in the day after allowing the shellac to dry I strung and exercised it but did not shoot it which maybe I should have.

Ron said that he will let us know.He couldn't detect any problems visually but thought we should be aware.

From: Fred Arnold
Date: 15-Feb-15

Just got a PM from Ron. Sounds good!!!

RonsPlc - OK... after re-stringing the bow, and slowly drawing it, I was able to get it to full draw. It will send a 1916 downrange at a fair clip!

I would say that the repair is a good one.

From: RonsPlc
Date: 15-Feb-15

"I would say that the repair is a good one."

As would I!

The bow shoots sweet!

At first, I was REALLY concerned about it, but I took a lesson from Ishi, and WARMED the bow before stringing it, and all went well!

I am able to get all 7 arrows into a 6" mark from 20 yards without a problem, and without any undue stress on the bow!

Give me the month... the 6" mark will dwindle to a 3" one!

Nice Bow Fred!

I've been working from dark to dark here recently, and ... go figure... this weekend we are under a winter weather warning. I actually had to leave work early yesterday to beat them closing the roads on me. It really is DIFFERENT here in the south... I don't remember them EVER closing the roads due to snow where I am from (Canada). LOL

I wasn't about to try taking it out in THAT weather.

Today (Saturday) has been raining all day. I am hoping for better weather tomorrow where I can take it out, and stretch my legs, and the bow's.

I am planning to take the bow to Tannehill for the pre-spring arrow fling next weekend, and will be sure to get a bunch of pictures for it there!

From: Fred Arnold
Date: 21-Feb-15

I haven't heard from Ron for a few days anyway. Next guy on the list needs to make sure the communication stays open and contact Ron by PM and let him know where to send it. Pics would be appreciated.

That's a great offer, I'm not going to add my name to the list cause anytime I want to shoot a selfbow I just grab one off the wall. :)

From: RonsPlc
Date: 22-Feb-15

Well, the Snow on Friday changed to freezing rain on Saturday, then to rain in the PM. and today (Sunday), it's misty, 53 degrees and wet. So I decided to take the bow out for a walk.

Getting ready.

Here's the start of the morning... believe it or not, there is a mountain ridge just behind that tree line... that's where we're going.

First shots... that dark spot just in the middle of the photo.

Same photo basically... just using the zoom feature on the camera.

Now to go get the arrows... the stump although rotten rejected every hit. .... and believe it or not, I DID manage to hit it a couple of times!

I can't get out into the woods without my neighbours dog joining me. She has been a good companion on my roves.

2 arrows rejected by the log, but I did manage to get one to stick!

I couldn't resist this picture!

The next target. That tree trunk is snapped off about 20ft up.

I managed to get a couple to stick in it! The fletch that is straight to the shot is a field point. The small game heads, and judos went the way the tree wanted them to go. I had to dig the field point out with my knife.

Although this log was down, and had been for a long time... it is still an arrow killer!

A closer view of the arrow tip, or rather where it used to be!

All in all, this bow is a pleasure to shoot. I can't wait to take it to Tannehill next weekend and let some of the likes of George D. Stout have a crack at it!

Just sent readheadlvr a PM with contact info. Nice pics Ron! Have fun with the bow. Are we all signing the bow somewhere?

From: RonsPlc
Date: 05-Mar-15

From what I read, we're to sign the belly of the bow Tody.

I'm going to ship the bow a bit early to readheadlvr as I have some commitments that will prevent me from shooting for the last week... set to ship out on Saturday.

Fred, I know you asked that the bow be shipped using the same packaging... but I just didn't want to wrap it in a loose cheesecloth inside the tube... I put it in a nice cozy flannel bow sock. I think it'll travel comfortably. :)

The time I spent with the bow was a pleasure. I was surprised and pleased that I could hit where I aimed with it right from the start.

My 1916's were a tad stiff for it, but worked just fine.

BTW, I went back to that log 3 times since it broke the tip of the arrow off... never did find the SGT Blunt that it claimed.

I will post on Saturday to confirm that it was picked up by USPS.

From: redheadlvr
Date: 10-Mar-15

Well...the bow arrived at my house . In the form of a postal (tried-to-deliver-but-no-one-was- home) notice. I must have a new carrier since nothing gets delivered unless it will fit in the mailbox. Guess I'll be taking time to make a trip to the p.o. tomorrow.

From: tonto59

Your suppose to send a signed arrow to the next guy in line too.

From: redheadlvr
Date: 11-Mar-15

Got to the post office today and picked this little gem up. I just got to try her out a few minutes ago (almost 8:30PM EST). Tried some 1916s but with my draw length and draw style 1816s work pretty well. I have to shoot her off the knuckle since I'm a leftie. There is a 3D tournament this weekend so she might be making this trip with me. So for the rest of you that is waiting your turn- you won't like her at all so I'll just do you all a favor and declare myself the winner of this bow. Just joking!

bigdog21 thanks for bringing it topside. Spring is here and I've been busy trying to get caught up on some neglected projects.

Please sign the belly of the bow if you will. Also you don't have to send an arrow along. You can send the original arrow but I thought it would be nice to have one of someone else's to your collection, sort of an arrow exchange as it passes through everyone's hands.

I unfortunately have had very very little time with this gem of a bow. Been fighting viral pneumonia really bad the last three weeks;it'll start to get better then BAM it hits harder the next round. When I have been able to shoot 1916s were used. Just my initial arrow size first try. Hopefully this weekend I can string her up and do some serious shooting. I'll try to post some pics.

From: Tody

The bow is sitting at my home this minute and I'm sitting at work. Unfortunatelly it didn't make my turkey trip with me as it arrived a day after my departure. I will try to take it out for some shooting this week. Very nice looking bow. The limbs seam to not be in alligment with the handle so I refrained from shooting it last week untill I got a hold of Fred and was reassured that is how the bow is and I can shoot it without breaking it.

Hows it shootin for ya?

Id like to get some arrows ready for when it comes my way.How wide is it at the arrow pass?

It looks as though it is more center shot, due to the limb alignment.

Small update on the travels of the bow. Last Sunday I had the opportunity to take it out to my first 3D shoot at Chicago Bow Hunters. It was a welcome invitation that I received from a fellow Leatherwaller, Eightweight. I can say that having never shot a selfbow or a long bow, it is a bow I could see myself carrying in the deer woods. Here is a few shots of us shooting the Osage. Very beautiful bow that I plan on taking some detailed pictures and try to replicate with my first stave. I was using full length 600 spine carbons with about 170 grains up front. Basically the same arrows I use with my #45 Grizzly.

The bow arrived safe and sound (thanks Traxx) with 4 signed arrows. I unpackaged it Monday evening (what a wonderful looking bow), and tested two different arrows this evening shooting up my driveway into a traget in the back of my garage. I took a picture of the bow and the first group in the target round, but the poor light and inside conditions do not do the wood and finish of this bow justice. I will get her outdoors soon for a proper session (both shooting and photographing). Thanks to all who did your part to get the bow to the next recipient and thank you Fred for this opportunity.

I used the bow for the "first shot" that member CD posts each week day. Today's shot was a walk-back series from 15, 20 and 25 yards. After the three cold shots, I shot a few more rounds then placed the bow on the bow sock that accompanies it and included the 4 arrows that shipped with the bow for pic. Looking forward to going stump shooting soon.

Well I was wondering were the bow was as I had not received a notice of a package yet in my po box( we don't have home delivery in this town). I went in and ask them today if there was a long package for me and the girl goes ohhh let me look. She then comes out with it and says ah it just came in. I said okay and took it back to work. Happy Happy Happy. I then ran the tracking # and it seems that its been sitting there since Friday the 18th, GRRRRR.

I now have it my possession and got out this evening as the sun was going down with my 1st shot ever out of the bow. I missed just to the left. Wish I could say I got better with the follow ups. They all hit to the left of where I was looking by 10 -12"s. Hopefully I'll figure it out in the next few days.

Those bend in the handle selfbows need about 10-15# lighter spine in order to fly properly to the mark. Even the ones I narrow the handle on require lighter spine or heavier points.

Well my time with Bendy has come to a end and its in the hands of the USPS :).

I want to THANK YOU Fred for allowing me the opportunity to shoot it for the month. I had never shot anything but production bows. So for me there was a steep learning curve. I quickly figured out the reason for the consistent left shots. It was combination of the shafts and me rolling the grip in my hand at the release. Once I figured that out it was pure joy to shoot. I used it a lot on the 1st shots that CD runs everyday. and I tried my hardest to get some blood on it the 1st 2 weeks of the season here but the deer would not cooperate. So hopefully Craig can get some PA blood on it.(no pressure buddy:))

Here's a couple of pics of it out in the woods.

I found this log and milk crate 19 years ago, It had a half ash stick blind built around it. I sat down on the crate to check out the view and within five minutes killed a 6 point, the 1st of many deer that myself or one of my three boys when they were young would get from here. The years have taken their toll on her and the deer no longer cross by her but I still spend a few sits every fall there. It's hard to explain why but I have to go there every year. On a side note I never met or found out who the original hunter was that set the crate there.

This is one of many reasons why Stickbow is an awesome archery site. Fred Arnold was one of the good guys on the leather wall. What a way to pass it on! Thanks to all the leather wallers that go above and beyond!;)
