Since 1999, I've been shooting an arrow off at 11:59:58 p.m. on December 31, so that it goes up in one year and lands in the next (I'm shooting at 145m, so there's plenty of time). Who's up for it this year?

Lol

I'm in. Lord willing. Jawge

From: bluelake
Date: 17-Dec-14

I knew you would be, Jawge! :-)

bodymanbowyer--we've had these threads on here every year, and they generally get quite a few people to do their own version (not everyone has the range to get in a long shot, so many do a close-up backyard one). Give it a try!

From: George Tsoukalas
Date: 17-Dec-14

bluelake, good to see you on here again. I'll be shooting into a target like I always did.

Jawge

From: George Tsoukalas
Date: 17-Dec-14

The first time we did this was 2000, bluelake and it was you who conceived of this idea. Jawge

From: coxral

That IS cool! I might try it, if I can stay awake!

One thing archers definitely are--imaginative :-)

OK if I'm awake my wife will think I'm nuts. Oh wait she already does. Jeff F ;-)

From: kenwilliams

I usually shoot shotgun and fireworks but that sounds cool, so arrow 1st, then and then shotgun and fireworks.

From: kenwilliams
Date: 18-Dec-14

Oops, one too many "thens"

From: Joey Ward
Date: 18-Dec-14

Does it bring you good luck?

I'm willing to try anything at this point.

:-)

From: turkey chaser
Date: 18-Dec-14

very cool, going to have to give it a try, I like the idea of a flaming arrow over the lake, our lakes should be frozen, a start of a new traditon, maybe get a few friends shooting flaming arrows at one time, cool idea, might be able to get a pic if so, I'll try to post. Hey what about flu flus?

Thanks

From: George Tsoukalas
Date: 18-Dec-14

Well, Joey, my mother used to say whatever you New Year's you will do the rest of the year. Jawge

From: vthunter
Date: 18-Dec-14

George -- Your Mother was correct. I got married on New Years 1959. LOL.

From: George Tsoukalas
Date: 18-Dec-14

vthunter, congratulations! That's so nice to hear. Ma was a smart lady. She was fluent in Greek and English. My mother, father and younger brother are gone. This arrow will be in Spiro's memory. Lord willing! Jawge

From: Dan W
Date: 18-Dec-14

That's funny- as kids, my best buddy and I shot flaming arrows into the night sky any time of the year for fun.

Bluelake- are you still in Korea doing traditional Korean archery? Good to see you back on board again.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 18-Dec-14

I'll likely be in bed before midnight, but I shoot arrows everyday so I guess I'm okay. Mom said, "don't do things just because someone else does them." If you're over 60, you will probably remember the rest of that.

From: woodshavins
Date: 18-Dec-14

Did it with the kids last year. I had them each write a little note about what they were grateful for and what they hoped for in the new year. We attached the notes to the arrows and sent them off into the woods at 11:59. Don't think they'd let me skip it this year;-)

From: mangonboat

Makes me wonder whether a sparkler inserted into an aluminum arrow would stay lit..if so it would make for a nice visual.

From: doug
Date: 18-Dec-14

about the time we take our shot of moonshine to welcome the newyear.

From: Dan W
Date: 18-Dec-14

Oh yes that sparkler WILL stay lit! Another bit of childish fun from my past. Besides arrows, we would tape the sparkler to a CO2 cartridge as a tail, bang it with a hammer and awl, and watch it take off.

(Disclaimer- I grew up back east, that would be arson here in CA. AND I'm a littler older now)

From: bluelake
Date: 19-Dec-14

Dan--Yup, I'm still in South Korea (not anywhere near Sony's "CEO" in NK ;-) ). I don't jump in much here nowadays, due to busy-ness, but I'm still around!

Yeah Went and shot our arrows into the pacific ocean off a cliff.Did't go off like clock work but we had fun.3 generations shot but unfortunately not exactly as planed. All arrows were lit up and shot.We had children with us and we did not shoot all at the same time.I figured gasoline was a bit too volitile for kids so our arrows were soaked kerosine. The kids arrows stayed lit because they only weighed 30# or less. The 2 +60# and the 47 # bows extinguished the flame a short distance from the bow on release. Here is some pictures.

I probably won't join this year. I'm kind of in G. Stout's camp now. Shot the midnight arrow for 8 or 9 years starting in 1999-2000.

I think the rest of G.S.'s mom's say may have been what my dad said: "If the neighbor kids were jumping off the roof, would you do it?" Of course we had already jumped off the roof AND the neighbors' roof...8~)

The 3 Stooges are on so I'll be watching them until 1130.

I'll be out there with my new bow and I'll shoot a couple of arrows into a block target.

I'm watching the Stooges also. But it's archery related; Curly has a gold finder that shoots a giant arrow!

Ahhh shoot! Wanted to do this this year, but forgot all about it till this morning. Never saw the thread either - but I havent been on much the last week or two. I'll fire some new year's arrows later today. Probably wouldnt have anyway though, missed the last step carrying my son downstairs last night and rolled my ankle - twisted it I guess. Spent the rest if the night with it elevated and iced. Cant even blame alcohol though -hadnt had any (yet)! Feels ok now, just stiff.

Good to see other families enjoying this new year arrow shoot too.We could probably have been arrested but it was fun none the less. The authorities are not too fond of people using bows in public areas where I live.Really can't see how it is more dangerous than sky rockets though.Doing it again next year at the same look out .May need to experiment with cotton and steel wool and sparklers for bows over 30# as the 47# and 60# bows extinguished the arrows a short distance from the bows. The cliff is a popular hang gliding site so it is a long drop to the ocean below. Hope you all had a happy new year. OSR
