Legal here, but not legal to use guns in bow season. Makes sense really. Is Iowa trying to protect bowhunters, or what's the deal with the prohibition? The bow and arrow certainly poses no advantage over the firearm.

I should have added we do have to wear orange when firearms are in the woods, even in the early season during the overlap with youth doe, and inlines...and turkey. The orange doesn't bother me and you can get away with the camo orange as long as it meets square inch requirements.

Iowa DNR officer said to me when I asked why we couldn't use bows during the shot gun seasons. " you bow hunters already get two months (includes the rut) , isn't that enough ? I think he was a gun hunter who didn't like the fact that we COULD HUNT THE RUT, OR MAYBE HE JUST DIDN'T LIKE BOW HUNTERS. (sorry about caps.) Bow hunters get another season in Jan too. The regulation I read for Mo is that it is not legal to bow hunt in gun season. If I'm wrong, I missed out on some good hunting. Mississippi used to be legal until crossbows came out & someone found an actual law that said it was not legal. For the past few years they have made an amendment to allow bow hunting during gun season.

The state forest across the lake gets heavy hunting pressure during gun season and its nothing to see deer crossing the lake to the state park. I always hunted the gun season in Ohio and with my archery gear. Never felt like I was any more exposed to mishaps then at any other time. And that included hunting some very heavily hunted areas. I also never had a problem with Blaze Orange issue, or had any indication they deer did either. You can (or could) wear blaze orange camo in Ohio).
The gun season was normally VERY productive for me as a bow hunter.

My understanding regarding Iowa's restriction is that they are trying to spread out hunting pressure between the bow season and two shotgun seasons. They don't want too many people in the woods during a given season, all competing against one another trying to find a place to hunt. That said, I see no reason why a landowner would be restricted from using a bow during shotgun season on his own property if he so desired.

Orange is mandatory in Ontario and Quebec during any firearms season for big game even if bow hunting. I don't feel disadvantaged as I have had a variety of animals walk by me very close while wearing hunter orange in the open, but remaining still or moving slowly while they were. These include deer, bear, a bobcat, lynx, fox, fisher, timber and brush wolf and coyote...I did wash the vest and hat in Sportwash and apply UV killer, just like my camo. I wish I could have bow hunted more on my recent trip but it was pretty nippy some days...below 0 degrees Farenheit with the wind chill and about 8 without it...I have no problem from 25 degrees up sitting with a bow and am going to keep experimenting with hunting while wearing orange.

I understand what you mean and it's the same in Illinois. But as long as you buy a gun season tag (in Illinois we have county quotas...not unlimited) then you should be able to hunt with gun OR bow just as long as you use the gun tag if you kill one.

Washington State allows you to chose your weapon and you are restricted to that method only. If you hunt during archery season, you may only use a bow, and harvest only one deer unless you have a special deer tag for some WMU. (Same for elk seasons, which do not overlap deer seasons). Then you cannot hunt with any other weapon during any other deer (or elk)season. Done. Early archery season overlaps with some high country modern firearm seasons, during which you must wear orange while bowhunting. You can chose to archery hunt for deer and modern rifle, or muzzleloader hunt for elk or vice versa, but you don't have to. You can archery hunt both species. So, only one weapon/season is allowed for each species, and there is little or no overlap. You have to pick and chose. Subsequently, I went without most of the time if I chose archery. Got close to alot of elk :) but not close enough...

In Mississippi you can bow hunt deer everyday from Oct 1 to Jan 31 regardless of the defined season. Previous to this year you had to wear orange at all times during any open firearm season. However they modified the rules this year so that you can remove the orange if you are in an elevated stand 12 ft or more off of the ground or in a fully enclosed hunting blind. I took my bow the my first hunt during firearms this year and it cost me a 10 point. He cane in too close for me to get turned for the shot without getting busted. 4 yards. Could have shot him ten times with my rifle. I had to laugh. I like hunting close up anyway.

Back in the 50-60's , Iowa had a choice. You could get only one deer license per year ! Thus you had to make a choice, hunt with whichever way you wanted, gun or bow, but not both ! Matter of fact, if you chose gun, it was done by draw, (limited licenses). archery tags were unlimited .
