Hard to o wrong with any of it, provided that it's not to heavily blended in with lesser fibers. SmartWool & Icebreaker have gotten my dollars so far. Filson makes some nice, heavy stuff but it's outside of my meager budget...
Might try here:

Icebreaker has more options in terms of weight and style than First Lite or some of the others. Icebreaker makes great stuff that I've used for year alpine climbing and skiing all over the world, but it does not come in camo. Which is only an issue for the early season hunts when it's still hot in the hills. For that I use First Lite.
Once you go Merino, you'll never go back to synthetic!

I work for two brothers. One of them passed away last January (cancer) and last week his wife asked me if I wanted some of his old shirts. One of them is a black long sleeved calvin klien 100% merino wool. New hunting undershirt! (Even if that is entirely NOT what it was made for)

I use some from Simms fishing, I absoluetly love it. That being said, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the more well known companies.

Great suggestions so far. First Lite is excellent, as is Icebreaker, Kuiu and Minus 33. I have to say, merino has ruined me on synthetic underwear for good.
And no, I don't understand the "camo underwear" thing either...

ANY of the quality Merino wool long underwear is fine stuff..
Takes a bit different care for washing-drying than the cotton or polyester stuff..but if well cared for..it'll keep a fellow warm an dry in a variety of temps..
I have three sets that are still working..sept to may.. that I have had for over 10 years...I'm indoors & out a lot in varying temps and rainy weather..Jim

I have Ufrotte (woolpower) and Minus 33. While both are awesome I like the Minus 33 better. I have mid-weight and expedition weight.
Woolpower is a looser weave more like a thick terry towel. The Minus 33 is flat weave like a t-shirt. As I said, they both work great. The flat weave doesn't snag and pull as easily as the terry weave. For my use that makes it more durable.

While we're talking underwear.... Don't forget briefs/boxers.
If you sweat in cotton briefs under Long johns you can still get cold. I have gotten a few pairs of synthetics and a pair of Minus 33 wool.
Not fun to spend $30 on a pair of underwear though

Guys, I just received a set of long wool underwear in the mail from The Sportsman's Guide. The are Italian military surplus, well enough made and only $24 plus shipping. To me, wool is wool and it all works the same way - pretty damn well. The companies mentioned above all make great products, but I'd personally buy from wherever the best bargain happens to be at the moment.

Babysaph just punked all you guys into giving him your unneeded two cents. I think he needs to buy something. Some people just will never learn JR sits there and giggles at you when you reply to one of his dead horse threads. Geez.

Dead horse thread?... These threads don't come up enough.. New people should know you don't have to dress in all that heavy bulky crap from yester year and sold today. Breathable layers, wind shield, etc. The more experienced input from everyone the better info out there, a lot has been learned and borrowed from the hiker-backpacker world, so one person just havin fun with it,is actually helping others that don't know..

Punked or not, the Italian Wool set for $20 is a steal. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/new-italian-military-surplus-wool- lj-set-green-white?a=1562293
The one posted review says they run small by American standards :)

I would add that not all wool is the same, by any means. There are many different types of wool, from different species, along with different manufacturing processes, and these differences can be significant.
Merino is a very different wool than your typical virgin wool found in something like a Filson coat, or your average old Army surplus long underwear. They may as well be looked at as different fabrics, imo, even though they have many of the same properties/advantages.
And then there is "recycled wool" used in many less expensive wool garments. I wouldn't bother with this stuff at all, as the process for recycling wool chops it up into much shorter fibers that are stripped of most of their natural lanolin - in other words, recycled wool is absent of much of the density and water-repellent properties of virgin wool.
If you're going to buy wool, buy good wool if at all possible. As with so many things, the durability and performance will make it a much more cost-effective choice in the long run.

To add to Smithhammer's info.
Recycled wool is why most people hate wool because it's scratchy. The chopped recycled wool has many ends. Think of a bowl of uncut spaghetti. Now chop it up so you can pick it up with a fork. See all those ends? No go back to your wool garment. All those pointy ends a jabbing your skin making it itch. Virgin wool is the uncut spaghetti. Nice long smooth strands against your skin, not pointy ends.

killin', I know, but figure so what if he does just throw these threads out there. Others who are well intentioned get to discuss their likes, dislikes and places to find bargains -it all helps, one way or the other.
