I have a Buck 102, and it is great. Christmas is approaching and I was wondering which is a better everyday carry knife for a traditional bowhunting whitetail hunter. I have three sons who could all use a fixed blade Buck of their own. Vanguard or Alpha? I see some are made with S30V steel. All opinions welcome as cyber Monday approaches. Thanks TLM

The Alpha I see is a lock blade folder. I like the Vanguard for sure though. My personal preference would be different as I like the 105 Pathfinder for a fixed blade.

Not sure if they still make the Buck alpha fixed blade either. There is one on ebay, that was made for Cabelas that looks interesting. Happy Thanksgiving! GDS! TLM

They are both nice. The Alpha Hunter fixed blade costs more than the Vanguard and weighs a bit more. It's full tang. Blade is a little shorter but just right for deer. Comes in S30V and 420HC. I think it would be an excellent deer hunting knife but have not used it. The Vanguard can also be found in the two steels and with a wood or rubber grip. It has a well-engineered stick tang to the butt. Below is a review I did on it before I had a chance to try it out. I really like the Vanguard in 420HC with the rubber grip. It takes and holds an excellent edge, and I can bring it back with 30 seconds on a grooved steel. My review shows other knives too. At just over $20 each, your sons might be better off with a Martini Hunter. It's half the weight of the Vanguard and just as good a knife. However, the Vanguard is really nice!

I have the mini-alpha fixed blade and think its great. Its the perfect size for dressing whitetail and feels real good in the hand.

I cannot speak for the alpha but my vanguard rocks. It has perfect economics for me. Mine is the wood handle with brass hilt and pommel.
