Just wondering what yer faves are? Reflex/deflex or straight limb. I currently have a martin Savannah and love it. I tend to better with recurves but I just love the longbows and wood arrows. I owned a northern mist I loved and I'm really looking hated at the st charles pacific yew. So let's hear all your faves!

From: davey crockett
Date: 23-Nov-14

More of a Hybrid I guess but I love the Centaur's.

From: Panzer

For some reason I hate the look of Hybrid R/D Longbows. I guess I'm a purist and prefer a "D" shaped bow. I have a Northern Mist "Baraga" coming that I hope will be the one.

My all time favorite is the Subdermal Hematoma, by Denton Forehead. They are rare though.

Panzer my NM was a Superior. The Baraga is similar. They're both reflex/deflex but look pretty classic when strung. That was a great bow. But rotator issues forced me to part with it and go lighter. You'll like it I bet.

George, I've never wanted to have one of my own, but have wanted to give one away once in awhile! I've only owned RER Vortex and Vortex ll. Never shot the Hill style. I always thought D shape referred to the cross section shape of the bow and not strung shape.

From: Stykman
Date: 23-Nov-14

Hummingbird Kingfisher TD r/d. Love the r/d look better than the traditional D. Shoots great too as one antelope and two deer this year can attest, if they could.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 23-Nov-14

Well, okay then, I'll quit being silly for a bit. I've owned a few very nice ones, but iffn' I had to pick one out of that bunch, it would be a Rocky Miller, Bridger Mountain 64" model Sacajawea. And only because it fit so dang well in my hand.

My favorite custom longbow to date is my White Wolf , but there are a lot of them that I have not shot.

Meigs bamboo longbow. Two of them, #46, #54. I like my Green Mtn. too, but the #46 Meigs is my favorite. Bought it in 85 and it has killed some nice deer and two bear along with snowshoe hares.

Yep he must be cause George never mispells anything n he mispelled subdural hematoma. I know cause I had one about 2 years ago.

From: GLF
Date: 23-Nov-14

seriously tho, I sold the one that fit me like a glove. It was a Zebra longbow that George sold to a friend of mine n I got it from him. Just wasn't my time for longbows I guess. I had so many recurves at the time.

From: Oldbowyer
Date: 23-Nov-14

Now wait a minute, I have one of those Denton Forehead Subdermal Hematoma's longbow. George had it right the first time. I also married a psychiatric nurse, she wanted a life long case study LMAO!

Been out of this for a long time so I don't know the bow you are shooting. Say you like your recurves, then in my opinion you will lean more toward R/D longbows. The straighter the longbow the more hand shock it will have, don't matter what the material in it. With that said many years ago I passed up on a yew self bow. Sapwood backing, heartwood facing, 40#@28". Beautiful bow. As I write this still kicking my ass for passing on that bow!

He got cancer from working in body shops for 45 years. He hunted the entire season just before he died. Said he was gonna enjoy his last weeks if it killed him. And before anyone makes the comment, Ed never had a drink or smoked a cig in his life.

My favourite longbow is a Schafer Silvertip that I only sold because the original owner, whose name is on it, contacted me and asked to buy it back...that bow at 62 inches was never intended for my 30 inch draw so it stacked like crazy...sometimes a bow that is a bit too heavy in draw weight and stacks like that makes one shoot better and that is the way it was with that bow...Dave Windauer is better known for his recurves; I will argue his d/r longbows are as good as it gets (as is his grip checkering work)

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Wow. I remember that bow. He and I met at West Virginia Bowhunter's Festival, off the Dallas Pike area of Rt. 70, just past Wheeling. He was looking for a longbow and traded me a Colorado Bighorn for it. I didn't have the Zebra with me at the time but he said, just take the recurve and send me the bow after you get home. Awesome fellow, he was. That was a while ago Gary.

I shoot a savannah as well and like it a lot. Haven't owned a custom yet and I'm not sure what I'll get when it's time. I have shot my buddys whippinstick and love the way it shoots! And I have shot a pronghorn which I also like. Haven't shot a thunder child or a centaur yet but want to. I'm gonna have a heck of a time choosing what bow I want to have made when I'm ready to buy

Well..Some great examples of some fine longbows you fellows have, shoot or like..

For me?.. My favorite custom longbow is one I made myself about10 years or so back.. Hunted at 2200-2600' in elevation for the yew tree that I hoped would yield some great selfbow staves..

Getting a permit from the Mt Hood Nat'l Forest folks was as complicated as getting to add bubble bath suds to the Pope when he is in his bathtub..BUT I persevered..:)

It was a smallish yew( male tree) about 13" in diameter but straight as a string.. Relatively young..at 75 years per inch it was around a 500 years old yew..Had to count the rings with a mag glass and needle..Could see a touch of grey from volcanic dust on the Mount Hood side that harkened back to the eruption of tha mountain before Lewsi & Clark came westward thru Oregon. Cut it with a folding saw and packed the 7.5' log out on my shoulder for over a mile..with frequent stops..:)

Sawed into staves and billets and set it aside to dry-season for almost 10 years..

Sent several of the staves to Pip Bickerstaffe over in the UK and he replicated some of the heavier bows found on the Mary Rose..145#@30" yew longbows..Working with the Mary Rose Trsut folks..

Anyhow, I did eventually make myself a yew longbow from one of the staves..Horn nocks..Buchanan style 'dips' not bend thru the handle..77#@30" for mine..

68" NTN..took no set to the string and shoots very fast and with authority with a 740 grain wood arrow.. So that is my favorite custom longbow..Jim

and I gave it a name that fits the bow..the style and myself..:)Jim

I have owned and shot many a fine glas lam longbow also.. Only one I currently have is a fine one of osage under clearglas made by Louie Armbruster's succesor..( for awhile) Doug Duncan..

It's 62" ntn..and over 70#@ my 30" draw.. Very easy to shoot, fast, stable..a true joy to use..It's not got but a 1" backset that sweeps rearward when unbraced.. Don't know how many of the Zebra Safari longbows Doug made..but I consider it a fine custom longbow of the most traditional sort..Jim

From: dire wolf
Date: 25-Nov-14

dire wolf's embedded Photo

and for those who remember Louie Armbruster's Zebra bows, Doug did a faithful job replicating Louie's classic limb tip overlays also..:)The riser is purpleheart.. Louie had retired to Mesa Arizona and passed away a couple years back..HE was a character and a fine longbow designer-crafter!..Jim

In my humble opinion, there is no better, more efficient hunting bow than a reflex deflex longbow, 56-58". At first I coveted my caribow (62") , then my Treadway, then another Treadway (56"), Then my Crooked Stic (56"), another Crooked stic (58"). All of these have taken deer, and made some memorable hunts, and are not for sale ! I just like the speed, quietness, ease of stringing, and ease of handling hunting, that a short reflex /deflex bow gives. The Indians were on to something...
