I agree. I just did a dozen Wapiti cedars last week. Beauiful, waterproof finish and Duco compatible.

Cameron I just cannot seem to get the hang of dipping woodies. Would it be okay if I just brought mine to ur house. I love watching a good man at work. I will bring along my remaining spar varnish and we will see how that works.

I have always dipped my wood arrows.. Epoxy a small funnel to a 1" piece of EMT electrical conduit that's 32" long with an epoxied cork in the bottom.. Or 3Rivers sells a dip tube ready made.

Shafts are straightened, tapered for nocks and points and cut to length before dipping..

For dipping wooden arrows..finish needs to sometimes be THINNED a bit..so it runs off readily as you pull the shaft out of the dip tube..Jim

Thanks Jim. I have straighten them and have nock tapered. I put 6" of thinner in filled and pumped a mixing shaft to mix. I have used this mixed solution in 4 to 1 in an air brush sprayer for refinishing bows and I was happy with the results. The one with the nocks on we're wiped on at first but after a dozen or more I went back to dipping. There's a dip tube in the pic

Rooty..IF you are not in a hurry..and get all prepared..with newspaper on the floor so you can prop the dipped shafts and allow them to dry..:) Dipping works well.. Important that the ambient temp is at least 70F and your finish applied is thiined so it almost runs off like water.. More than one coat is always good..:)

After ya cap & crest them..you will dip the entire wood shaft one pr more times anyhow..:)

Making arrows of wood from start to the finish-shooting is a great part of stickbow-trad archery...:) ESP good when they fly the line to the mark as you designed them to do..:)

Last 2 dozen I worked up are matched in spine & weight..Dipped with clear sealer..Fletched with wild grey goose feathers..Jim

Nice. Last year I was in a hurry. I quickly found out that quick and wood arrows don't mix. I have a Crestor on the way. I used a drill last year got that tip form you. Instead of paint I am using fine paint pens. As far as feathers go I am going to butt splice my tail ends and then burn them. Burner is needed young or battery charger style is on the list and a grinder type taper out fit as my bearpaw is good but not good enough.

I hang my shafts from clothes pins on a line...newspapers under em of course...and have the finish pretty thin so it runs then drips. I rough slightly in between coats with fine steel wool and dip again. Usually put four coats on.

Thanks a bunch Jim...now Rooty is going to put me to work gathering goose feathers....guess I really ought to be contributing something to the process...I am not sure if you have taken part in the North American Longbow Safari...it will be near Calgary this year and it would be great to have you there

Four heaviest in spine and weight. Got the frill out and gave them some wobbles

I've fletched with 5.5" barred turkey feathers for years with good arrow flight.. Bitz helical jib on wooden 3 flecth arrows.. The grey goose feathers are softer..but have more resistance naturally to water-rain-moisture..

Last batch of grey goos feather I got from Tommy and Jan over at Raven Arrows in Idaho..Very nicely selcted and ground..Jim
