This huge Buck was taken on public land here in Southern WV by a buddy of mine on Tuesday. The Buck green scored 196 5/8", after deductions and drying, it should go 190" to 191". The buck is an archery kill, not with trad gear, but such a beautiful animal, I thought you would enjoy seeing. The WV archery record is around 174", firearm is about 185", so this should break those easily. I hope it is ok to post this, as I was amazed by the rack. Here is a pic of me holding it. Tom

Chad is a great guy and killed one heck of a deer. You got the score exactly right. He'll best the old records by a good bit. And he shoots a recurve at the church shoot Tom. :^) So, it is traditional related. God Bless

Yep, it was almost perfect as far as horns go. Great mass, length, spread and very symmetrical. Chad is a very friendly, humble guy. Very happy for his accomplishment. Tom

What a stud buck. Congrats on a great animal. Glad a archer got him rather than him getting killed in a car wreck[like a lot of our big bucks do around here]. Trophy of a lifetime. His antlers are so huge it makes the skull look like a fawns skull. Hope he breaks the record. Roy

This just goes to show that most all states can have true trophy class animals if they are allowed to grow old.

Great buck and pics, but the really traditional part of this post is the straight forward honesty about your friend's choice of armament. Ephesians 4:25

I see the jawbone in the pics... so I am guessing that y'all aged the buck. What age did you come up with?

From: Tom McCool

I would miss that shot at 10 feet! LOL! Great animal, congrats.

From: Blackhawk Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Impressive!

I was amazed at how close it was to the record bow kill which scored about 204 back in the 60's.

BTW, that brute was taken with a Howatt Hunter.

Wow Tom thanks for sharing this animal its a beast. What an animal and congrats to your buddy he gots something there most wouldn't even realize what they have other than a big buck. This buck will get a lot of reconition with all sorts of things.LOL

I have always said animals like this exist in places guys don't think could have one like this. Heres further proff I guess.

Congrats again to your buddy and for showing us. Looks like he started to go palmation as well.

It appears most are a bit confused. The buck was killed in the largest and longest running bow hunting only area in the United States. While a deer of this caliber is rare ANYWHERE, the state of WV is no slouch in producing big ones. What Pope and Young advertise is one thing and, with no mandatory admission program or law that states a deer score has to be obtained, very few make it to the record books.

With most of the land in this area being corporate owned, leasing and free range is the way it is. And most don't want their lease rates going up or the fact that it is open to anyone who has a legal license, to be public knowledge. So, they don't enter them. The serious horn hunters that hunt in these areas have collections that will rival Kansas, Iowa, or any other big buck state. Now, killing them in 75% sloped terrain that requires the highest of physical fitness, nonstop scouting, and a lot of luck, gives the deer the favor by a wide margin. The few out of stater's and WV residents that don't live there and do give it a whirl, often go home to never return.

It isn't for the faint of heart or the majority of deer hunters. But, if you got the time, the health, and the drive to do it, you could tie your tag to a deer that will truly be a once in a lifetime buck. God Bless

That is a lot of deer!! Tell him congrats!

From: tomandrews

Maybe this will entice northern wv to set some limits on rifles or rack size so this will happen here to. Why not make muzzleloader hammer guns with open sights. It was initially intended to be a primitive weapons season.
