I was lucky enough to win a pair of Browning bows over the weekend at a local auction. First one is a Spartan- 62", 39# and the other is an Explorer- 62", 44#, ser.#3d176. Love these older Brownings with the rosewood risers and 3 or 4 lams in the limbs. The explorer is getting a face lift but the Spartan just needed cleaned and buffed out. Will try and post some pics when I can.

I've been hoping to find a 62" Browning to add to my collection but haven't run across the right one yet.

In about 1964, I wanted to buy my first real hunting bow and I looked at the Browning Explorer hard..the ads anyhow..such as we had those days..A beauty..
I ended up ordering a Bear Kodiak Magnum and 2 dozen microflite 7 glas arrows from Bear Archery in Grayling..
I did find sevral Browning vintage recurves for both my sons years later..They are fine bows..well designed and finished..and good shooters!..Jim

Excellent bow, that Explorer. I use to be on the watch for a Challenge in a high draw weight. Never found one over 40 some lbs. They're absolutely beautifull bows.

I actually have quite a few Brownings, including an Explorer...don't have it yet as it's coming to me via a friend in the States who picked it up for me. They're truly excellent bows and easy on the eye to boot with the graceful designs, yet they function well.

Woodshavins, mine is the older explorer with solid rosewood riser, 62". Both bows had been stored in rafters in an old shed until the auction last Sat. Neither had been shot much because they both had original stick on rest and white endless loop strings that browning put on their bows at that time. I'm thinking they are 60's but not sure on how to read ser.#. Both had bow socks and no holes, straight limbs, just a lot of grime. Bow socks helped to protect the limbs. The Explorer's riser had a lot of scratches and finish was in rough shape. Sanded it down with 220 and buffed with 0000 steel wool. Tru oil finish. Looks pretty good. Not bad for $27.50 each.

Could be George, all I know for sure is that she is BRAND NEW...never ever strung that I know of, I know I never strung her up and there is not even a hint of a mark on her ANYWHERE. This is 45#, 62". I also have a 48#, 62" that has the solid rosewood riser, and I have a 54#, 62" solid rosewood riser that has been camo-d. The two that I shoot, shoot like a rocket and hit right where I look. I also have a 60" Fury II that is 48#...she also shoots like a rocket. It seems that the Browning's shoot so well, IMHO, because of the limb design and the multi-laminations. Either way, Browning bows are an unsung hero as far as I'm concerned.

Rich, they have been "sung" quite a bit over the past couple years and the value has gone up in that time. The lack of recognition factor is pretty much gone. That's a 1974 model and that rest is likely the one that came with it. Good find.

That is the truth...underdogs but people are waking up to them and the prices are going up. I have four Explorers...Explorer, Explorer 1, and Explorer 2...and another Explorer 1 that is near mint other than a name scratched in lower limb near fadeout that I shoot. Hanging next to a mint Safari and Cobra II. :) I love them..... Here are two Explorers and a Cobra off my wall.
keep em sharp,
ron herman

Me too George, they had a pretty high wrist, which can be challenging for me from time to time, but they shoot 100%!

The high wrist is not my first choice, but I can shoot them fine. I had one in 1968...a Shakepeare Titan X-15 target bow, as my first field/target weapon. I actually enjoyed shooting that bow a lot.

"Both bows had been stored in rafters in an old shed until the auction last Sat"
Stykbo3,
Let us know how those puppies shoot. Sounds like they look pretty good. I have about half of my bows stored in a similar situation and I wonder a bit about the freeze and thaw cycle. But they are largely wood, which is naturally suited for that. I shoot when I go to the cabin and they seem OK..

Catskills, The Spartan cleaned up nicely, just needed a good buffing and a new string and arrow rest. 39# and smooth shooting. The Explorer was a little different. While buffing with 0000 steel wool I noticed a small sliver raise on the edge of the upper limb. I glued it back down with thin super glue and sanded the whole bow down with 220 wet dry paper taking care not to remove the decals. Refinished with Tru Oil gun stock finish. 45# and nice to shoot. Surprisingly neither bow had any holes drilled which was nice. I have always been a Bear bow collector but now am turning my interests towards Brownings.I have 6 now and will be on the hunt for more. Bob
