Not the biggest buck in the woods but my first buck with trad bow. Not real proud of the shot. A little too far back with a long and sometimes sparse blood trail that ended well. Congratulations Duane. Nice first trad buck. Don't ever under estimate a liver shot (by the looks of your arrow). They don't leave a lot of blood, but are often 100 yard recoveries if the deer is not pushed. Well done!

From: Flintlock

Here's the rest of the story. I was set up in the far corner of a cut soy bean field with my 48# Pearson Mustang in hand. The field is boardered by a long strip of woods with a small stream running through it that is a natural funnel. Its a clear 25 deg frosty morning not a breath of wind. At first light i could see a deer slowly walking the field edge. Stopping to feed and check scrapes along the edge. As he got closer i could see he was a buck i would try to take if given the chance. As the buck aproached to 50 yards he decided to cut across the field corner. Taking him well out of my 20 yard range. So with nothing to lose i pulled out the grunt call and blew two soft grunts. he stoped and looked my direction for a minute then continued on his way. Another grunt stopped him again and he walked my direction a few steps but turned to leave again. Time to get more agressive. Two grunts and a snort weeze was more than he could take. he trotted right into range and stopped at about 15 yards. Tree limbs preventing a clear shot. He stood and looked for what seemed like for ever. Then lost interest and slowly started to feed on a few beans left in the field. Finally stepping clear broadside at 18 yards.

At the shot he spun and ran 100yards across the field with my fletching sticking out his right side and dissapeared into the woods. A tangle of multi flora rose green briar, honey suckel and small trees. The shot looked a little back but still good to me as he ran away. After an hour and seeing 2 more smaller buck i got down to check for blood. I've got blood from the first jump and good blood across the field obviously bleedind from both sides. I follow the sign into the woods for about 20 yards and mark last sign and back out and get help as i am badly color blind.I make a call to a hunting buddy and plan to come back aroung 1:00 after i buy him lunch. Long story shortened after loosing sign a time or two and crawling through briers for 3 hours and 300 yards. We find my very dead deer. My arrow still in him through the liver.

Nice deer and congrats if you stay at this there will possibly be other shots less than happy with it goes with the turf.LOL

If thats a 5 point, its a good 5 point and you should be every proud of taking that deer. You can't compair any other harvests with your first trad bow take.

Have you considered a dark spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide to help you find blood?

Funny thing… 15 years ago I could have sat here and told myself that I’d let a buck like that walk in favor of a doe and/or waiting for something bigger. But I had better access to private land back then, and the herd was a LOT bigger. And even then… with the season winding down fast, that buck would’ve been DOOMED unless I’d already managed to stack 2 or more into the freezer.

Nowadays, I’m more practical minded; I still tell myself that one buck a year is all the more that a guy should really allow himself.

Awfully nice buck, IMO, and you obviously did everything right on your recovery effort. Thanks for telling the tale so that others may learn…….
