Hey all, I finally got my hands on a '73 Howatt Super Diablo. It has some sight holes, but otherwise in great shape! I am tickled! I've read a great deal about how much folks like these bows and I love the way it shoots! I'd like to make a hunting stabilizer for it. Do you have any photos of one? Have a great day! Tom

The old Howatt stabilizer was torpedo shaped. I have one similar but it has a small bushing, not the 5/16. I would give it to you if you can get an adapter for it. I think they make them yet. PM me if you want it and I'll send it to you. I'm in Bedford County, Pa...so not far.

Here's a photo. The bushing is 1/4"..so you would need an adapter.

Thanks, George. I was thinking I would turn one out of some Ipe I have laying around here. I like the way they look on the Super Diablo, yet I'm not crazy about them on other bows. Thank you for your offer, though. It's nice to see how people help out around here.

The original ones were made of rosewood and perfectly balanced the Super Diablo..But they had a tendency to break loose from the spring they were connected to. Once in a Coon's age you see one of Flea Bay. The originals are hard to come by these days. Might be because they broke and were pitched back in the day.

Thanks for the info and pictures, guys. I'd thought they were just adding weight, buy it sounds like there was more than that going on.

George, that bow used to be mine. A young (stronger) friend owns it now. Good picture of it though.

Hey George, that unpainted stabilizer looks just like a "Bear" hunting stabilizer I had back in the late 70s or early 80s. It also looks a little different from the painted one you posted (the unpainted one has a "dimple" on the end). What's up with this? They look similar enough that they might have been made in the same place and sold to different companies? - John

I took the original photo off google. The one I have was in a box of junk I bought at a flea market. The old Bear Stainless Steel stabilizer was the same diameter all the length, and came with a leather cover for hunting. I don't know who made them for Howatt but I suspect they made them for general use as well...whoever it was.

I bought a new Super Diablo in Spokane, WA when I was in jr. college. 60# @ 28", complete with stabilizer and padded bow case. I traded it in, when I moved to the dark side, on a Hoyt compound. Lingered there for several years till I moved to Olympia and discovered Northwest Archery and Glenn St. Charles, who brought me back to the traditional life. I regret loosing that bow greatly....

You have a very nice SD there and it is much more interesting being a lefty, lol. I have a couple of them, lefty too; mine are 45-46# so a little more lighter in weight of what I usually like, but they'll be good in the years to come. I like the way they shoot, great grip, fast and smooth.

I will tell you from owning two of these Super Diablos over the years that these bows shoot much smoother with that little stabilizer than without. The stabilizer has a very heavy spring in it and that black part moves slightly. If you look closely at the picture of my old bow you can see the shaft and small gap between the two pieces.
