I recently traded out my #1 55pound fastflight limbs on my "A" handle and put on 48pound #1s (older white tips).Same string etc-brace height probably increased 4-5 full inches! Why? Did the older limbs "bend" differently? I have swapped others before and never had to change a thing???

I'd say somehow you got the wrong string on it. There will be a change in brace height from Gainesville limbs to grayling limbs...but NOT 4-5"! Sounds like you have a string from a different length set of limbs!

Lay the unstrung Bow on a large piece of paper and mark the profile. then mark the profile of the other set of limbs unstrung.
Now string it and lay the bow down on the unstrung profile and measure the difference in the preload from strung to unstrung,
This will tell you how much difference in preload you have compared.
You could just do the tips down midway ad then measure.
Preload is the amount the limbs are loaded from unstrung to strung.
Lots of things determine preload but that is the number one contributor.
A Bow that looks hard to string will generally have more pre load and be faster. Faster is not always the easiest to tune or forgiving to shoot.
Preload also loads the limbs earlier in the draw and the DFC changes with more draw length. Limbs which are longer usually have more area to distribute the weight and stack less.
It gos on and on,,

So you're saying your brace height went from about 7 1/2- 8 inches to 12 to 13 inches. Something is very amiss. I have the newer and older red tip no. 1 limbs, the former at 52#, the latter at 48#, and when I interchange them, it maybe takes a twist or two of the string from one to the other to get the proper brace height. I'm still of the feeling that you either got the strings mixed up, or the first set of limbs are no. 2s or 3s.

Mike,
Have you actually put the limbs side by side? Early Gnv limbs were #x but that number did not mean the same thing as a Grayling #x.
I want to say Gnv #2 were Grayling #1's, but I don't remember for sure. I have no idea if the newer Gnv's went back to the old system.

Green tip limbs on my greenstripe takedown are no.1 limbs... But they start with a 2- in the serial number. From about the time of the first greenstripes there are no no. 1,2,or 3 limbs, just number 1's that start with a 2- in the ser. no. Which I surmise means B riser, because that was the only riser they made at that time !

I am with you there Mike. I do a lot of leather work and I don't know who is going to thread my needles for me once my daughter leaves the house.
