I've taken quite a few deer wearing the wool red/black and grey wool pants. Skeet

All wool shirts and jackets with contrasting checkered patterns do a far better job of breaking the human outline than store bought 'sticks-n-leaves' patterns ever will. Plus, wool is non reflective, unlike synthetics and wool will still insulate when wet - that other garbage will not. Having said all that I just generally feel that "realtree" and the like looks REALLY GAY, but whatever. :)

Some "hunters" don't wear red/black clothes because people can see them. They prefer camo that better for hiding from humans because they might be hunting on land where they don't have permission or where they aren't supposed to be. Skeet

""where they don't have permission or where they aren't supposed to be."" Ahhh, yeah...but they shouldn't be. LMAO

Commercial is great for hiding folks from folks and that can be an advantage for some. Actually, the old WWII camo has better light/dark contrast than some of the new small pattern stuff, as does the Vietnam pattern. As roger alluded to, light absorbing quality means a lot as well and loden green wool will disappear in piness, as will gray in white oaks and limestone.

I'm of the opinion a deer is likely to detect un-natural sound, lateral movement, or human scent within its senses, even if the source appears like a natural shrub. I doubt a deer would notice a noisy fumbling shrub and then calmly go about its business, because it is fooled into thinking its just one of those walking talking bushes it sees every day. Looking exactly like a bush doesn't negate silence, disciplined movement, wind, sun, thermals, and physically being in the correct place at the correct time. Wear something functional that is comfortable, quiet, and breaks up your outline.

Best :)

Actually, to show the benefits of plaids and checkers as camo, that's not a very good picture. The outline is still VERY clear and virtually unbroken and that is what gives you away as much as anything.

Here is one where I think I blend in pretty well. The pants especially...

...and in colour... what is really interesting, aside from the way the earth tilted that day, is that my son, while dressed in neither camo nor plaid, and with his bright blond hair, is totally invisible in the first pic! ;0)

...and more interesting than that, is how your left arm and hand is totally invisible in the color pic. Your son would need to be in color, and you in black and white, to hold hands on a walk!!!

I've thought about that a lot. No one's grandpappy wore Realtree or Mossy Oak. And they didn't use scent killer, either. And most of them probably killed a ton of deer with a lit cigarette in their mouth. Im looking to get a pair of Malone Grays this year.

To do a true comparison I guess I need to take a pic in full realtree/mossy oak too
