I finally made the decision to order my first longbow. Been wanting to do it for a long time. I ordered a Dwyer Defiant 62 " 53 #. Since I'm a complete newbie I need some advice on arrows. I really don't know how you choose the spine. Thinking of going with carbon arrows and maybe one day having some cedar ones made. I have seen the test kits you can buy to try out different spines so maybe that is the way to go. Any advice would be appreciated.

First off:what point weight do you plan on using and are you drawing to 28" +or- 1"? Carbons are fine but not the be - all end - all of arrows. There is nothing wrong with aluminum with the exception some bend easier than other and are the most consistent (all arrows will break) but carbons are lighter in physical weight. Well built woods are cheaper than carbons are and are the quietest of the three (they're not hollow).

Depending on your draw length and point weight you want to use, you could use 500 or 400 spine carbons. Good luck and welcome from Maine.

I was planning on around 170 grain heads. My draw length is about 27 inches. I will be hunting whitetails mainly with the hope to one day take it along on an elk hunt. Hopefully I'm thinking around the right lines. I just ordered the bow so I have a while before I have it in my hands but I already can't wait.

500 spine carbons should tune well with your setup.

Have you shot some traditional bows yet?
